Appleby, J.B., 90
John Bell “J.B.” Appleby,
son of Roy Eugene and Lora D. Smith Appleby, was born December 15, 1917,
in Seattle, Washington. He departed this life Friday, March 28, 2008,
in his home, near Lebanon, Missouri, at the age of ninety years, three
months, and thirteen days.
On April 15, 1939, he was united in marriage to Edna Gladys McDonald,
and to this union one daughter and three sons were born.
He was preceded in death by his parents; twin sons, Donald and Ronald
Appleby; and two brothers, Carl and Smith Appleby.
J.B., as he was always called by his family and friends, is survived by
his loving wife, Gladys, of the home; a daughter, Dianna Lowe, and her
husband, Carl, of Lebanon, Missouri; a son, John Appleby, Jr., and his
wife, Lori, of Lebanon, Missouri; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren;
two sisters, Helen Marie Riggs, of San Francisco, California, and Nell
Jean Sieber, of Wrightsville, Pennsylvania; several nieces and nephews;
as well as a host of other relatives and many friends.
He was raised in the Willard, Missouri community, and was graduated from
Willard High School. He continued to make his home in Southwest Missouri
where he owned several businesses and was very entrepreneurial. In 1955,
J.B. went to work for Rich Line Industries in Richland, Missouri, and
headed their sales department. He traveled the Midwest and South selling
Rich Line’s all-aluminum boats. In 1959, he started his own company
in Lebanon, and in March of that same year he shipped his first load of
10-foot aluminum jon boats to the Sears and Roebuck Company in Kansas
City. Although sales were his greatest strength, he had a keen mind for
manufacturing as well. From this beginning the company grew to be declared
the world’s largest maker of aluminum boats in 1964, when Standard
Industries in New York bought Appleby Manufacturing. J.B. and Gladys’
daughter, Dianna, and her husband, Carl, continued to operate the company
under the Appleby name until creating Lowe Boats in 1971. Though Appleby
Boats existed for less than twenty years, the company and its founder
left an indelible mark on the city of Lebanon.
J. B. was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Lebanon.
He was inducted into the Wall of Honor in the Cowan Civic Center for his
contribution to the Lebanon community. He had earned his pilot’s
license and enjoyed flying his own plane. He and Gladys loved to travel
and had made many excursions in their RV. He enjoyed being outdoors where
his favorite activities were fishing, gardening and playing golf. He was
a kind hearted man that loved his family and was proud of their accomplishments.
J.B. was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother,
and uncle, and was a caring neighbor and friend. He was a devoted family
man, a dedicated businessman, an industrial pioneer, and a good friend.
Today, we celebrate his life and his accomplishments. He touched many
lives and established an industry that provided jobs for thousands of
men and women through the years. His greatest legacy was that he accomplished
his success while always being a Christian gentleman. For this, he will
be greatly remembered.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 1, 2008,
in the Holman-Howe Funeral Home, Lebanon. Burial will be in Mount Rose
Memorial Park. Visitation will be held Monday evening from 7 - 8:30p.m.
