Alta Marie McCrory of Bolivar, Missouri passed away on December 4, 2014, at the age of 99 years, nine months and 13 days. She was born February 20, 1915 in Fair Play, Missouri to Frank Elmer and Betty Sprague.
Alta grew up in Polk County, where her parents owned the Fair Play Café, and spent her lifetime in the Bolivar and Fair Play area. She graduated from Fair Play in 1932 and that same year married Bill Hawkins. They were blessed with three children, Bob, Larry and Janice.
The couple owned an American Motors car dealership, gas station and garage in Fair Play, where she sold her fair share of cars. In 1971, Bill passed away. Alta married Howard McCrory in 1977 and they enjoyed many years of traveling and companionship before he passed away in 1986.
Alta enjoyed gardening, bird watching and was a hard worker. She was known in Bolivar for her garage sales. Alta was a charter member of the Fair Play United Methodist Church and was the oldest living member of the church, where she attended since childhood. She enjoyed working the elections and later worked in a children’s store. Alta loved to fish and once caught a three-pound crappie. She also enjoyed collecting dolls and antiques, and playing Bingo and Skip-Bo with her friends at the Gardens. Alta was always dressed impeccably. Family is what meant the most of all to Alta.
She is survived by her three children, Bob Hawkins of Ozark, Missouri, and his wife Linda; Larry Hawkins of Lake Pomme de Terre; and Janice Franke of Walnut Grove, Missouri; six grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter, three nephews, and her canary, Angel.
She was preceded in death by parents; her husband Bill Hawkins; second husband Howard McCrory; sister Margie Hughes and brother Perry Sprague.
