My heart and spirit go out to the family. Austin was a fighter and was determined to give it his all, no matter what he was doing and even before the cancer. He was always right and rarely backed down from it -- and frustratingly, he was right most of the time. He always kept his sense of humor and was always thinking about others, even when things were bad for him.
Gaming with him, he was awesomely fun and frustrating. Whether it was his barbarian jumping into a pit because he didn't care how deep it was (it turned out to be 200 feet deep and his character survived) or deciding that he was absolutely going to play that barbarian with a 12 Dexterity, even though it really disadvantaged him. "I don't care. I'm not changing. It's what I rolled, I'm gonna play him."
He was always going to do things his way, no matter what the plot or genre dictated. I actually had to end a campaign because he was so dedicated to what his character believed that he pretty much blew up the team to stop the enemies. *That* was Austin.
I was worried for him traveling out to Charlotte to start a new career on his own, because doing such a thing seemed so scary to me. But he showed little doubt and proved not only successful in his career, but he touched the lives of so many people in Charlotte. I was astounded by the number of friends and supporters he had when we went to visit him in October.
God bless him, we need more like him in the world. Or maybe, we all just need to be a little more like him.
