Betty Ruth Scurlock (Buffalo)'s Obituary
Betty Ruth Scurlock, daughter of the late Lum Jefferson and Jewell Marie Meeks, was born on July 15, 1944 and was raised in Reeds Springs, MO. She departed this life at the age of 79 on January 28, 2024 at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, MO.
She married Benny Dame on August 16, 1962, and they had two sons and a daughter. She later married James Scurlock on October 20, 1972, merging his six children from a previous marriage with her two children and completing their family with their youngest daughter, Erin.
Betty was a faithful member of Cedar Ridge Freewill Baptist Church for over 40 years. She served as song leader for many of those years and enjoyed spending time with the friends she made there. She was a lifelong hard worker whether she was working on the farm, at the spring factory, or Copeland. She found the most joy in tending to her garden, finding new recipes, and spending time with family.
Betty was preceded in death by Benny and James, her son Jeffrey Dame, her parents, an infant sister, infant twin brothers, sisters Bonnie Tilden, Nora Bailes, and Iva Nell Davis, and brother William “Wig” Meeks. Betty is survived by her children: Scott Dame, Shellia Palmer, Erin Dickinson, Pamela McGraw, Patricia Pierce, Larry Scurlock, Jennifer Wilson, John Timothy Scurlock, and Michael Scurlock; sister Audrey Hedrick, brothers Leon Meeks and JD Meeks. She also leaves behind many grandchildren, great
grandchildren, and close friends that will miss her greatly.
Betty was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, and friend. She was most likely to be found reading her Bible, tackling impossible stains, squabbling with Bruno, cooking a coveted Sunday breakfast, or catching up on Jeopardy. Betty will be remembered for her kind, faithful, and loving spirit. She is already missed by those who love her.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. on Thursday, February 1, 2024, at Cedar Ridge Freewill Baptist Church in Long Lane, Missouri. Betty will be laid to rest at Flatwoods Cemetery in Laclede County.
Arrangements are under the direction of Cantlon-Otterness & Viets Funeral Home, Buffalo.
