Carl Hartley's Obituary
Carl Lee Hartley, the son of Carl Francis and Virginia Frink Hartley, was born September 6, 1933, in Mansfield, Missouri. He departed this life Thursday, December 31, 2009 at Cox South Hospital after a brief stay. On June 3, 1956 he was united in marriage to Alice Ann Drake; to this union two daughters were born. Carl was preceded in death by his parents. Carl is survived by his wife, Alice; two daughters Lee Ann and her husband, James Roark; Gina Jo and her husband Danny Cardin; all of Springfield, Missouri; three grandchildren, Alexandra Lee Roark of Columbia, Missouri; Christopher James Roark and Kathryn Lee Ann Cardin both of Springfield, Missouri. Carl Lee graduated from Mansfield High School in 1951. From there he attended Drury College for two years before joining the United States Army in 1953. He spent the next eighteen months in Germany serving his country. Upon his return to Mansfield he met and married Alice Ann. He then attended Southwest Missouri State College in Springfield, Missouri where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in education with a major in mathematics and a minor in speech. He began his teaching career in Gainesville, Missouri followed by five years in the Norwood School system. He finally moved to the Mansfield School in 1965 where he taught for twenty years. During that time he fought for increased teachers’ salaries and teachers’ rights. While at Mansfield he loved working with the students. He established the Mu Alpha Theta math club, a nationally recognized organization. He continued his own education by spending five consecutive summers earning his Masters Degree in Mathematics from Boston College in Massachusetts. Just prior to his retirement from teaching high school he owned and operated the Hartley Auto Supply and Exhaust in Mansfield and in Mtn. Grove, Missouri. While managing two businesses he also taught math for Drury College. Anyone who knew Carl would understand that he could fill up a room just by his presence. He was both loved and feared by many and whatever he did he did it “his way”. He will be sorely missed by his wife, daughters and grandchildren. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday January 4, 2010 at the Mansfield Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in the Mansfield Cemetery under the direction of the Holman-Howe Funeral Home Mansfield, Missouri. Return to top
