Curtis Adams (Urbana)'s Obituary
James Curtis Adams was born in Springfield, MO to Paul G. and Lucille (Winkie Barnhart) Adams on October 22, 1949. He departed this life at his home in Mount Vernon, MO on Thursday, August 15, 2024.
Curtis attended Urbana Schools from first through the eighth grade, then on to Skyline High School, graduating in 1967. He attended Kansas City Trade School to become an auto body repairman. He returned to Urbana to work for Bridges Chevrolet, then Williams Chevrolet. He was an excellent repairman until health forced him to resign.
In 1960, he was attending Vacation Bible School in Urbana when he accepted Jesus Christ as his savior and was baptized in Thomas Creek. He remained a faithful servant of the Lord in the First Baptist Church of Urbana until moving to Mount Vernon. He attended First Baptist in Mount Vernon until his health failed. In Urbana, he served as a VBS teacher and worker, usher, musician, yoke-fellow, church camp worker and cook, janitor, lay preacher, and in any other capacity needed. In Mount Vernon he served as a prayer partner for boys and in Operation Christmas Child. He also served on the board of the Mission Ridge Cemetery.
In 1969 he married Charla Mae Godfrey, who had a small daughter, Theresa, who he helped raise. In 1972 he and Charla had a baby girl, Alma Lynn.
In May of 1974, Curtis married Joann Elizabeth Carter and to this union one son, John Curtis was born. They lived on a small farm East of Urbana from 1976-2016 when they moved to Mount Vernon to help with their grandchildren.
Curtis was preceded in death by his parents; his in-laws, Glen & Betty Carter; brother-in-law, Jimmy E. Carter; great-nephew, Christian Alexander Helm; grandson, Devin James Inglis; and his first wife, Charla Scott. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife Joann of the home; his children, Alma (Matt) Lindsay, John (Shannon) Adams, Theresa Adams-Baker (Scott); his grandchildren, Payten Mae Lindsay, Sydnee Rae, Kennedy Lee, Madison Lynn Adams, and Alley and Sammie Baker; one sister, Paula Jenkins; one nephew, David (Brittanie) Jenkins; and one niece, Melissa (James) Miller, Ryan and Summer Miller. He also leaves other family members and many friends who will all truly miss him.
William (Willie) Cox spent so much time with us growing up, we just called him our “adopted” son plus his wonderful wife Marcie and girls, Jewels, Lily and Autumn.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, August 23, 2024 in the Urbana First Baptist Church with Pastor Juston Davidson and Darren Smith Officiating. Escorts will be Roger Magnuson, Bob Young, Willie Cox, Harvey Cumpton, Steve Blankenship, Gregg Owens, and David Jenkins. Honorary escorts will be Tim Rice, Mike Crave, Kenny Johnston, Brad Dampier, Steve Kenall, Ryan Sorrel, Braten Mabary, and Dr. Lisa and Brad Parker. Interment will be in the Mission Ridge Cemetery under the care and direction of the Cantlon-Otterness & Viets Funeral Home of Urbana. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday at the Funeral Home. Donations may be made to the Mission Ridge Cemetery Fund.
