Darrell Winfrey (Lebanon)'s Obituary
Darrell Winfrey, son of Ed and Etta Sellers Winfrey, was born December 25, 1928, near Montreal, Missouri. He departed this life Saturday, July 4, 2015, at Mercy Hospital, in Lebanon, Missouri, at the age of eighty- six years, six months, and nine days.
On October 31, 1953, he was united in marriage to Clara Pauline Potter, and to this union two daughters and one son were born.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Clara, on March 16, 2012; a brother, Ferrell Winfrey; and three sisters, Hazel Priest, Emma Winfrey, and Wilma Whitworth.
Darrell is survived by two daughters, Diana Banks, and her husband, Dave, of Blue Springs, Missouri, and Dana Kay, and her husband, Richard, of Eldridge, Missouri; a son, John David Winfrey, of Richland, Missouri; six grandchildren, Lauren, Maria, Matthew, Michael, Justin, and Tyler; two great-grandchildren, Jeremiah, and Jacob; a number of nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
He was born and raised in the Montreal community, and graduated from Camdenton High School in the Class of 1947. He served in the United States Army from 1949 until 1950 stationed in Washington, DC. He then served as an Army Reservist until 1955. In 1950, he began working in construction and helped in building the Paseo Bridge in Kansas City, Missouri, and grain elevators throughout the Midwest. He next worked for the State of Missouri Road Department for a time before becoming employed as a Civil Service worker in the Transportation Department at Fort Leonard Wood,, retiring in 1976. He also owned and operated a farm all the years he resided in Camden County. Later, he obtained his real estate license and worked as an agent for Century 21 Real Estate for several years.
Darrell professed his faith in Christ at the age of six at the Montreal Baptist Church.
He was a longtime member of the Masonic Lodge through the Linn Creek Chapter 152. He greatly enjoyed horses and owned several through the years. He also liked gardening in his spare time. He loved children and always liked interacting with them. His family was very important to him and he especially enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Darrell was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and was a caring neighbor and friend. We celebrate his life and accomplishments. We know that his family and friends will treasure the wonderful memories he made for them during is eighty-six years.
