Delbert Buchanan, beloved husband, dad, grandpa and brother, departed this life the morning of Friday, September 7, 2019, at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Missouri, after a brief illness. He was eighty-four years, nine months and nine days of age.
The eldest of eight children, he was born Delbert Hal Buchanan on November 28, 1934, in Mt. Zion, Missouri, to Ray Voin and Myrle Iola (Whiteman) Buchanan. He attended Ava schools and started working for REA Douglas County when he was sixteen. When Delbert was nineteen, the Buchanan family moved to the Quad Cities for work. Their new neighbors were the Henleys. They had a beautiful young daughter that quickly caught Delbert’s eye, and on March 30, 1956, Delbert wed Anita Clair Henley, and to this union two daughters were born. For the next ten years he worked for Moline Pressed Steel, a manufacturer for the famed Buddy L. Toy Company. In 1963, the Buchanans moved back to the area. In 1969, they purchased what is still today the family farm in rural Seymour. Delbert and Anita dairied cows for thirty-three years and then raised stock cows. In spare time, he really liked to fish, and he and Anita enjoyed riding Fox trotters. They also attended First Baptist Church of Seymour until his poor health would not allow. In addition to his parents, Delbert was preceded in death by his daughter, Glenda Lue Buchanan; and his brother, Johnny Gene Buchanan who was a twin to David. Delbert is survived by Anita, his devoted wife of over sixty-three years; daughter, Peggy Buchanan of Springfield; a granddaughter, Cheryl and James Watson of Strafford, Missouri; three grandsons, Douglas and Chandra Calhoun of Strafford, Chad Hannaford of West Clift, Colorado, and Heath Hannaford of Springfield; eleven great-grandchildren, Ashly, Preston and his twin brother, Landon, Bailey, Daniel, Samantha, Lexi Jo, Brandon, Valerie, Clayton and Hayden; six siblings, Delta and Don Stafford, Vernon Buchanan, Lequeta and John Mackey, and her twin sister, Leveta and Jim Stewart, David and Janice Buchanan, and Tony and Peggy Buchanan; sister-in-law, Lorena and Reverend Robert McFarland, of Sun City, Arizona, and brother-in-law, James Henley of Costa Rica; many, many nieces, nephews and cousins, and even more dear friends and neighbors. Delbert H. Buchanan was a man of faith. He was a dedicated farmer. He was a devoted and loving husband and father, a fun-loving grandfather, a caring brother and a loyal friend. Delbert will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew and loved him. A lifetime of memories and happy moments created with family and friends will be treasured in hearts forever.
