Doris Jean Sparks (Bolivar)'s Obituary
Doris Jean (Weatherbie) Sparks, age 92, passed away September 29 at Hermitage Nursing and Rehab in Hermitage, MO.
She was born in Blue Mound, KS, on July 13, 1923, daughter of Fred Kelsey and Vivian (Perry) Weatherbie.
Doris attended grade school through high school in Blue Mound. She grew up on the family farm just south of town. She would ride a horse from the family farm to school. After graduating from Blue Mound High School in 1941, she attended Kansas City Business School.
On September 23, 1945, she married Guy Melbourne Sparks in Kansas City, KS, and to this union four sons were born, Richard, David, Jeffrey and Brent.
She lived in Kansas City and Topeka, and moved to Oakley in 1951 were she was a homemaker and help Mel and family at the Centre Theater. The family moved to Goodland, KS, in 1967 where Doris worked for the SRS office as a Clerk Typist. In 1980 the family relocated to Colby, KS, where she worked until retiring in the mid 1980's. Mel and Doris relocated to Bolivar, MO, in 2000 to be closer to family.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Bolivar. She enjoyed being with family, home cooking for her family, and playing card games with family and friends.
Doris and Mel started square dancing lessons in Colby in the early 80's and really enjoyed going to square dances around the country for many years. They also went of several trips to Hawaii, cruises and winters in Arizona.
Survivors include son Jeff Sparks and his wife Robin of Pittsburg, MO; grandsons Tyler Sparks of St. Louis, MO, and Trevor Sparks of Pittsburg, MO; son Brent Sparks of Overland Park, KS; a brother Fred M. Weatherbie and his wife Mary Lou of Fort Morgan, CO; and several niece and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Mel in 2014; and sons Richard and David.
