Dorothy A. Slate (Mansfield)'s Obituary
Dorothy Anne Slate, daughter of Elza Wayne and Hazel Morris Chamberlain LaFollette, was born September 27, 1929 in Hudson, New York and departed this life on June 5, 2014 in her home near Mansfield, Missouri at the age of eighty-four years, eight months and eight days.
On June 29, 1954 she was united in marriage to Ray Slate and to this union five sons and 3 daughters were born. Ray preceded her in death on April 18, 2000. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Brenda Craig, a grandson, Mike Henry and five sisters.
Dorothy is survived by five sons, Tommy Slate, Chester Slate, T.J. Slate, John Slate and his wife, Angie all of Mansfield, Missouri and Carl Slate and his wife Wanda of Ava, Missouri; two daughters, Janice Henry and her husband, Jerry of Mansfield, Missouri and Shelia King and her husband, Randy of Wichita, Kansas; sixteen grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Bonnie Sartin of Golden, Missouri; two brothers, Junior Soden of Golden, Missouri and Jim Soden of Joplin, Missouri; son-in-law, Ed Craig of Carbondale, Kansas as well as many nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
Dorothy was born in New York and moved to Republic, Missouri with her family at the age of 12 where she graduated from Republic High School. After she and Ray were married she traveled with him while he was in the Army. They moved to Mansfield in the late 1950’s where she worked for many years at Tobin-Hamilton Shoe Factory in Mansfield and also had worked in Mansfield Public Schools as a teacher’s aide.
She had made a profession of faith in Christ many years ago and was a member of the Mansfield First Baptist Church.
In her spare time she liked to do needlepoint, word puzzles and play cards.
Dorothy was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, sister, aunt and a caring neighbor and friend. We celebrate her life and will cherish the many wonderful memories we had together.
