Dr. Paul Mallinckrodt (Lebanon)'s Obituary
Dr. Paul Berthold Mallinckrodt, son of Dr. Paul L. and Frieda H. Wallenbrock Mallinckrodt, was born March 4, 1920, in Old Monroe, Missouri. He departed this life Wednesday, November 25, 2015, in Springfield, Missouri, at the age of ninety-five years, eight months, and twenty-one days.
On June 27, 1948, he was united in marriage to Mary Virginia Mitchell, and to this union one daughter and two sons were born.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Mary Virginia, on May 11, 2003.
Paul is survived by a daughter, Mary L. Baker, and her husband, Kenneth, of Tallahassee, Florida; two sons, James E. Mallinckrodt, and his wife, Deborah, of Overland Park, Kansas, and David P. Mallinckrodt, and his wife, Joni, of Ozark, Missouri; five grandchildren, A. J., Stephanie, Brandon, Christian, and Marissa; five great-grandchildren, J. R., Henry, Chloe, Leni, and Lachlan; as well as a host of other relatives and many friends.
He was raised in St. Charles, Missouri, where he graduated from high school. He then attended dental school at St. Louis University, graduating in 1943. He entered the military through the V-12 Program and served as an officer in the United States Navy from 1943, until receiving his honorable discharge in 1946. During World War II, he was stationed in the Philippines for part of that time. He was part of the Pontoon Assembly Attachment # 1 where he served his major assignment as a dental officer. He then returned to St. Louis, where he began private practice in Washington, Missouri. During this time he never turned a patient away and even did house calls. He entered the public health field in 1951, and lived in Jefferson City, Missouri, and in Macon, Missouri for a few years. He served as an educational promoter in Independence, Missouri before moving to South Dakota, where he was director of dental health for several years. In 1957, he moved to Lebanon, Missouri, and became the Laclede County Dental Health Director, and then was district director for Southwest Missouri. He established a private practice in Lebanon and continued in that endeavor until retiring in 1984.
Paul was an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Lebanon for many years. Throughout that time, he served in various capacities including as a lay leader in the church.
He was always involved in community service and had served as President of the Stoutland School Board, and as President of the Maplecrest Parent Teacher Association. He had also been an entrepreneur and enjoyed reading, cooking, and caring for his home. His family was very important to him and he especially enjoyed having time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Paul was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and was a caring neighbor and friend. We celebrate his life and his accomplishments and know that he will be fondly remembered as a devoted family man, a dedicated dentist, a patriotic citizen, and a wonderful friend to many. He will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends.
Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Episcopal Church, and left at the funeral home.
