On December 24, 1944, she was united in marriage to Thomas “Tom” Sanders and to this union six children were born. Tom preceded her in death on September 15, 1994. She was also preceded in death by her parents, a son, Ronnie, a daughter, Brenda, and two brothers, Elmer Moody and Bill Gleason.
Leona is survived by four daughters, Joyce Brennan and husband, Mike, of Republic, Missouri, Connie Abbott and husband, Scott, of Springfield, Missouri, Lola Sanders and husband, Ed Yarberry, of Topeka, Kansas, and Patricia McGuire and husband, Jeff, of Clever, Missouri; fourteen grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; two sisters-in–law, Juanita Moody and Genora Gleason; several nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
She was born in Iowa and moved with her parents to Macomb, Missouri, at the age of seven and attended the Macomb School. After she and Tom were married they moved to Springfield where she worked for many years at the College Street Café. She also worked in housekeeping in Cox North Medical Center for eighteen years before retiring.
In her spare time she enjoyed cooking, sewing and going to garage sales. She had an open heart, open home, she never met a stranger, and nobody ever left her home hungry. Her greatest enjoyment was spending time with her family. She loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren dearly, and they loved her.
Leona was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and a caring neighbor and friend. We celebrate her life and will always cherish the many wonderful times we had together.
