Edna Vandergrift's Obituary
Edna May Vandergrift, daughter of James Wesley and Mary Ann (Patterson) Sutton, was born May 29, 1929, in LaHabra, California. She departed this life Tuesday, February 25, 2009, in her home, near Hartville, Missouri, at the age of seventy-nine years, eight months, and twenty-six days.
On March 9, 1946 she was united in marriage to Ulas Floyd Vandergrift and to this union three sons were born.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd, on November 12, 1990; a son, Wayne Vandergrift; her parents; and a brother, George Sutton.
Edna is survived by two sons, Art Vandergrift, and his wife, Janet, and Wesley Vandergrift, and his wife, Sheryl, all of Hartville, Missouri; six grandchildren, Jena Kugel, Mary Thornton, and her husband, Dan, Jessica Beaver, and her husband, Jason, David Vandergrift, and his wife, Mandy, William Vandergrift, and Jeremy Vandergrift; three great-grandchildren, Morgan Kugel, Jordan Thornton, and Joseph Thornton; a brother, James Sutton, and his wife, Cynthia, of Bay City, Texas; a number of nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other relatives and many dear friends.
She was born and raised in California and attended school there. After she met and married Floyd, they remained in California until moving to the farm in Wright County, Missouri in 1957. In 1965 they moved back to California due to family health and moved back to the farm in Wright County in 1969. In the 70’s they started the lumber store and Floyd’s Auction Company. Besides being a devoted homemaker she also helped with the store and was the Cashier and Office Manager for the auction service.
Edna had made her profession of faith in Christ and had attended the Freewill Baptist Church. She later joined the Little Creek Baptist Church, where she enjoyed her church fellowship.
She loved spending time with her family and caring for her home and dog, Dolly. In her spare time also enjoyed gardening and crocheting.
Edna was a kind and caring person with a big heart, she was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and aunt and was a caring neighbor and dear friend. We celebrate her life and accomplishments and will treasure the wonderful memories she has created for her family and friends.
Services will be 10:30 A.M. Saturday, February 28, 2009, in Little Creek Baptist Church, north of Hartville, Missouri, with burial in Shady Cemetery, under direction of Holman-Howe Funeral Home, of Hartville. Visitation will 10:00 A.M. until service time on Saturday at the church. A memorial has been established to Shaddy Cemetery and may be made through Holman-Howe Funeral Home, P.O. Box 236, Hartville, Missouri 65667.
