Emily Lucy Duncan's Obituary
Emily Lucy Adams, daughter of Moses Noyes Adams and Clarice Adeline (Sheldon) Adams, was born June 23, 1922 in the family farmhouse near Judson, Missouri in Sullivan County. She departed this life on Sunday, July 2 at Cox Medical Center South in Springfield, Missouri at the age of eighty-four years and nine days. On December 25, 1950 in Kansas City, Missouri she was united in marriage to James Ewing Duncan, and to this union two sons and two daughters were born. Jim & Emily were married for almost fifty-three years. She was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister, and a daughter-in-law, Carol (Redlich) Duncan. Emily is survived by daughter Polly J. Cartwright and her husband, Dan, of Gillette, Wyoming; son Tommy L. Duncan and his wife, Rita, of Weldon Spring, Missouri; daughter Shelda V. Bannon, and her husband, Jim, of Delray Beach, Florida; and son James A. Duncan, and his wife Holly, of Hollister, Missouri; thirteen grandchildren; sisters Mary Helen Dickerson of Belton, Missouri; Margaret Ware of Kenai, Alaska; and Ines King of rural Milan, Missouri; and a host of other relatives and friends. She graduated from Milan High School, Milan, Missouri and went to work in Kansas City as a young woman. During the years of World War II, Emily worked both at the Long Beach Naval Shipyard and at Pratt-Whitney aircraft plant to support the war effort. After her marriage in 1950, she devoted herself to her family as wife and mother. When her husband retired from Sears, Roebuck & Co. in 1962, the family moved from Kansas City to Camden County, where Jim & Emily operated Jim’s Tunnel Dam Fishing Camp on Lake Niangua. The Duncans operated the fishing camp until 1984, when Jim and Emily moved to Gillette, Wyoming and later to the State of Kentucky to live near daughter Polly and her family. In November 2003, Jim and Emily returned to Missouri to live near son Jim and his family in Hollister. James E. Duncan died on December 11, 2003. Emily lived for a year at the Pt. Lookout Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Hollister before transferring to Maranatha Lodge in Springfield where she lived until entering Cox Medical Center South a few days prior to her death. Emily placed her faith in Jesus Christ as a young girl and faithfully served the Lord throughout her life. In Kansas City, Emily was a member of First Assembly of God, later named Evangel Temple Assembly of God. While living in Camden County, Emily was a member of both Bethel Assembly of God (now First Assembly of God) and Ozark Bethel Chapel Assembly of God. She was active in children’s programs and women’s programs, and served the Lord in many other capacities. One of her great joys was that her four children graduated from Camdenton High School and from Evangel University. Emily Duncan was a loving wife, devoted mother and grandmother, and faithful friend to many. We celebrate her life and accomplishments as she now enjoys “sitting at the feet of Jesus.” Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 5, 2006, in the Allee-Holman-Howe Funeral Home. Burial will be in Allee Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 12:00 p.m. until service time. Services are under the direction of Allee-Holman-Howe Funeral Home of Camdenton, Missouri.
