Esther Ellis' Obituary
Esther Ellis, daughter of Lewis Edward and Sally Dick (Hopkins) Long, was born October 19, 1919, in Wright County, Missouri. She departed this life May 1, 2007, in Strafford Care Center, in Strafford, Missouri, at the age of eighty-seven years, six months, and twelve days. In October of 1938 she was united in marriage to Robert Paul “Bob” Ellis, and to this union three daughters were born. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob, on June 13, 1969; her parents; four sisters, Agness and Helen Long, Amel Blevins, and Viva Gooch; and two brothers, Carlos and Samele Long. Esther is survived by three daughters, Rebecca Burwick, of Springfield, Missouri, Melinda Allen, and her husband, Francis, of Ingles, Florida, and Sally Ellis, of Falls Church, Virginia; four granddaughters, Sharla Burwick, of San Diego, California, Stephanie Burwick-Caines, and her husband, Robert, of Ashburn, Virginia, Shanda Burwick-Rardon, and her husband, Trevor, of Sharpsburg, Georgia, and Heather Terhark, and her husband, Gregory, of Centennial, Colorado; five great-grandchildren, Ethan and Corey Rardon, Devin and Dillon Caines, and Anika Hissong; two sisters, Allie Walker, of Palm Desert, California, and Nora Ellen Jones, of DeKalb, Illinois; a number of nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other relatives and many friends. She was born and raised in the Coon Creek community, after finishing 8th grade at Coon Creek, she and her sister Amel went to Hartville, where they worked for room and board in order to attend high school. After graduating in 1938, she attended Gertrudes Beauty College, in Springfield, Missouri. She then traveled by train to Kansas City to take the state test, this was the beginning of a life long love of travel. She married Bob and together they operated Ellis Barber and Beauty Shop, while farming. After Bob’s retirement she remodeled and operated Ellis Beauty Shop until August of 1996. Esther had made her profession of faith in Christ and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Hartville. In her spare time she enjoyed growing beautiful flowers and working crossword puzzles. Esther was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and aunt and was a caring neighbor and friend. We celebrate her life and accomplishments and will cherish the wonderful memories she has created for her family and friends. Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, May 5, 2007, in the Holman-Howe Funeral Home, Hartville. Burial will be in Steele Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be held Saturday from 2:00 p.m. until service time under the direction of Holman-Howe Funeral Home of Hartville, Missouri. Memorials to the First Baptist Church and Wright County Historical Society may be made through the funeral home.
