Esther Young's Obituary
Esther Carrol Young, daughter of Loman Basil and Nora Velma (Wood) Ferriel, was born June 8, 1930, near Hartville, Missouri. She went home to be with the Lord, Friday, March 5, 2010, in Ozarks Medical Center, in West Plains, Missouri, at the age of seventy-nine years, nine months and twenty-seven days.
On June 12, 1948, she was united in marriage to Richard “Dick” Young, and they shared thirty-nine plus years, until his passing on May 4, 1988. She was also preceded in death by her father in 1971; a son, Philip Mark, in 1981.
Esther is survived by a son, Rick Young and his wife, Carolyn, of Fordland, Missouri; three daughters, Donna Frey and her husband, Bob, of West Plains, Missouri, Lea Ann Young, of Springfield, Missouri, and Diana Wilkerson and her husband, Lyle, of Mountain Home, Arkansas; two grandsons, Ryan Young and his wife, Angela, of Ava, Missouri, and Trey Wilkerson, of Mountain Home, Arkansas; a great-grandson, Riley Young; her mother, Velma Ferriel, of Lebanon, Missouri; two sisters, Joyce Butts and her husband, John, of Springfield, Missouri, and Wilda Ferriel, of Lebanon, Missouri; a number of nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
She worked for the Superintendent at Hartville School as secretary/bookkeeper until 1953 when she resigned to start her family. Esther was a devoted homemaker. Her family was a very important part of her life. In 1957 she and her family left the farm and moved to Batesville, Arkansas where Dick was employed as a Poultry Inspector with the Department of Agriculture. After five years, Dick was transferred to Cabool, Missouri. In 1971 she and Dick bought his family’s farm and in 1975 they moved back home. She enjoyed working on the farm with her husband. After his death in 1988, she took care of the cattle with her son’s help until 1995.
Esther professed her faith in the Lord at the age of thirteen years. She was baptized and joined the Green Valley Baptist Church, later moving her membership to the Hartville First Baptist Church. After she and Dick married, she joined the Pleasant Hill Freewill Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years. She also served as church clerk from 1977 thru 2009 and church secretary-treasurer from 1993 thru 2009.
In her spare time she enjoyed sewing, quilting, crafts, working in her yard and garden, and going to basketball games.
Esther was a devoted wife and mother, a cherished grandmother and great-grandmother; a beloved daughter and sister; a loving aunt and caring neighbor and friend. We celebrate her life and her accomplishments and will treasure the memories she created. She will be fondly remembered and greatly missed and will forever live in our hearts.
Funeral services for Esther will be at 11:00 am Wednesday March 10 in Holman-Howe Chapel, Hartville,Missouri.
Visitation will be 6:00 to 8:00 pm Tueday evening March 9, in the chapel
