Everett L. Leatherman (Seymour)'s Obituary
Everett L. Leatherman, son of Clare and Ruth L. (Cunningham) Leatherman, departed this life Saturday, July 12, 2014, at Glenwood Healthcare in Seymour, Missouri, at the age of ninety-one years, one month and six days.
Everett was born June 4, 1923, in Lomita, California. He and his siblings were raised in the Torrance and Lomita area. The Leathermans owned a filling station where Everett worked as a young man. He attended Torrance High School. Everett joined the armed forces in 1942, and proudly served his country as a United States Marine. He married Dorothy Louise Hathaway on November16, 1957, and to this union a daughter, Bonnie, was born.
Everett’s military career was a very distinguished one. A World War II veteran, he was awarded the Order of the Purple Heart for wounds received on Guadalcanal on October 9, 1942. In addition, he received two Presidential Citations, one for five campaigns and the other for seven. Known as “Pappy” to his loved ones, he moved to Seymour in 2008 to be closer to family. He was a friendly man with a care-free spirit. Everett enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing and travelling. In addition to his parents, Everett was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Louise Hathaway in April of 1961; his daughter Bonnie; brothers, Wendell Leatherman and Kenneth Leatherman; and sister, Ruth Geneviere. Everett is survived by his long-time family friends, Shirley J. Wardwell and husband Herbert, of Seymour, Missouri; David E. Wardwell and wife Carol, of Brea, California; Dan E. Wardwell and wife Kathy Joe of Seymour; grandchildren, Blake, Breanna, Brady, Brittney, Brock and Brannigan; and nieces and nephews in California. Everett Leatherman will be remembered as a dear, life-long family friend and serviceman. We take this time to honor a life well-lived. He will be sadly missed by all those blessed enough to know him.
Military honors will be performed at 11am in the yard of Holman-Howe in Seymour, Missouri.
