Frances Hedges' Obituary
Frances Kay Hedges, daughter of Otis and Amber Greenwood Miller, was born September 11, 1915, in Des Moines, Iowa. She departed this life Wednesday, December 23, 2009, in Christian Health Care South, in Lebanon, Missouri, at the age of ninety-four years, three months, and twelve days. On October 9, 1934, she was united in marriage to John H. Hedges, and together they shared sixty-nine years before his passing on December 6, 2003. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; an infant granddaughter, Debbie; four brothers, Harold, Wilbur, Wesley, and Kenneth; and four sisters, Esther, Rosemary, Dorothy and Viola. Frances is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Jon and Joyce Hedges, of Lebanon, Missouri; four grandchildren, Molly Ann Richlen, Jeffrey Hedges, and his wife, Jennifer, Jon Hedges, Jr., and his wife, Darcey, and Todd Hedges; ten great-grandchildren, Ian, Jacob, Evan, twins; Summer, and Stormy, quadruplets; Jessica, Jarod, Josh, and Jordan Hedges, and Ely Carnthan, and his wife, Laura; a sister, Susan Miller, of Manchester, Iowa; a number of nieces and nephews; a special pet Yorkie dog, “Cindy Lou”; as well as a host of other relatives and friends. She was born and raised in the Des Moines, Iowa area. After she and John were married, they continued to make their home in Des Moines where they owned and operated restaurants, they then moved to Winterset, Iowa, where they owned a farm and raised dairy cattle. While a young woman when her husband was serving in the military, Frances worked at Solar Aircraft in Des Moines and played on the all-woman’s baseball team, and was an excellent athlete. In 1954 they moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, where they operated three restaurants. After retiring from the restaurant industry they moved to Lebanon, Missouri, where they purchased the Forest Manor Motel. Frances also was a devoted homemaker to her husband and family. Frances attended First United Methodist Church in Lebanon. In her spare time she enjoyed playing bridge with her friends, entertaining her family, and wintering in Brownsville, Texas. She continued to follow the sport of baseball through the St. Louis Cardinals. She was a generous mother and grandmother, and liked helping her grandchildren. The special light of her life was her pet Yorkie, “Cindy Lou”. Frances was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, sister, and aunt, and was a caring neighbor and friend. We celebrate her life and will cherish the wonderful memories she created for her family and friends. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday December 29, 2009 at the Holman-Howe Funeral Home, Lebanon. Burial will be in Mount Rose Memroial Park. Visitation is Monday Evening 7-8:30 p.m. under the direction of the Holman-Howe Funeral Home Lebanon, Missouri. A memorial has been established to Christian Healthcare Hospice.
