He passed away peacefully on August 10th at Citizens Memorial Healthcare Facility, surrounded by family. Gary married Elizabeth Ann Hendrickson June 3rd 1966. The two celebrated 50 years with friends and family last summer.
Gary was saved when he was 10 years old and joined Campbell Grove Missionary Baptist Church. When his parents moved their membership to Calvary, he joined along with them. On Father’s Day in 1980, Gary was called to preach. Shortly thereafter, he moved his membership to Pleasant Hill where he remained a faithful member until passing. He pastored several churches, and preached at many more. He pastored at Oakville, Flemington, Bismont, Schofield, Stockton, Pleasant Hill, and Mt. Olive. He was elected moderator of the Polk County Missionary Baptist Association in 1992. He held this office until resigning in 2015, having served 23 years. He saw many saved and was privileged to baptize his three granddaughters and one daughter-in-law.
After graduating from Bolivar High School, he worked alongside his dad and great uncle building custom homes. In later years, his sons joined him.
Gary had a great passion for horseback riding. He broke and trained many horses. He would often tell the story of how he sold his Quarter Horse to pay for Elizabeth’s engagement ring. The couple hadn’t been married 6 months before Gary had his first Fox Trotter. The couple rode their horses for many miles in various states. Gary shared this hobby with loved ones up until the last 5 months of his life.
