George T. Allen (Lebanon)'s Obituary
George Thomas Allen, son of Jacob J. “Jake” and Mary Geneva Skidmore Allen, was born January 17, 1922, in Merna, Missouri. He departed this life Tuesday, December 13, 2016, in his home, near Lebanon, Missouri, at the age of ninety-four years, ten months, and twenty-six days.
On April 23, 1950, he was united in marriage to Norma Darlene Lillard, and to this union two daughters were born.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a foster son, Thomas Files; a sister, Margaret Burnett; and a special uncle, Chester Allen.
George is survived by his loving wife of sixty-six years, Darlene, of the home; two daughters, Sheila Allen, of Lebanon, Missouri, and Mary Francis Davis, of Mechanicsville, Virginia; a grandson, Kris Allen, of Lebanon, Missouri; two great-grandchildren, Skylar and Forrest Allen; a great-great-grandchild, Korbin Sanders; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
He was raised in the Franklin and Boonville areas, and then joined the military as a young man. He served his country faithfully in the United States Navy from September 3, 1942 until November 6, 1945. He was stationed on a destroyer around the South Pacific during World War II. In 1950, he met and soon married Norma Darlene while working in Kansas City, Missouri. After they were married, they moved to Lebanon to be near Darlene’s family. In 1955, George went to work for Super Propane Gas Company, hauling gas. This allowed George to make many friends around the country, as well as eat a lot of gooseberry pie. He continued working in the propane business and retired in 1985 as the manager of the Empire Gas Store in Garden Grove, California. Once he and Darlene retired, they moved back to their hometown of Lebanon.
George professed his faith in Christ in the 1950’s and had been an active member of Mount Olivet Assembly of God Church near Lebanon.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and always said, “No day is a bad day if you’re fishin’!” After he retired, George would spend many days waist deep in a river just waiting for that big one to come along, or sitting in a tree stand watching for the perfect deer to stroll by.
George loved his God, his family, and his country, and will be sorely missed by all, but our memories of him will live on.
