Gladys Jeter's Obituary
Gladys Marie Jeter, daughter of William Lenore and Nora Dibben Hawkins, was born November 30, 1919, in Buffalo, Missouri. She went home to the arms of her Lord and Savior on Friday, May 4, 2007, in Phoenix Mountain Nursing Center, in Phoenix, Arizona, at the age of eighty-seven years, five months, and four days. On April 20, 1940, she was united in marriage to Wesley Beryl Jeter, who preceded her in death on August 25, 1980. She was also preceded in death by her parents; and four brothers, Bill, Harry, Jim, and Everett Hawkins. Gladys is survived by a daughter, Sandra Robison, and her husband, Jim, of Phoenix, Arizona; a stepson, Russell Jeter, and his wife, Gertrude, of Lebanon, Missouri; six grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; five brothers, Dave Hawkins, of Springfield, Missouri, Gene Hawkins, of Marshfield, Missouri, Don Hawkins, and his wife, Sally, of Lebanon, Missouri, Jack Hawkins, and his wife, Arlene, of Channahon, Illinois, and Junior Hawkins, of Kansas City, Missouri; a number of nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other relatives and friends. She was born in the Buffalo, Missouri community and then moved with her family to the Lebanon area. After she and Beryl were married, they made their home in St. Louis, Missouri, where besides being a devoted homemaker, Gladys also worked for Wagner Electric for thirty-two years. In 1987, she returned to Lebanon, where she lived until moving to Phoenix, Arizona in 1977, to be near her daughter and family. In 2005, she made her home in an assisted living home and was lovingly cared for by the Hospice of the Valley during her last several months. Gladys made her profession of faith in Christ early in her life and was a member of First Christian Church in Lebanon. She and her two sisters-in-law, Dale and Wilma, were actively involved in the church and especially in the Christian Women’s Fellowship for a number of years. In her spare time she enjoyed doing hand work such as embroidery, crocheting, and quilting. She had a great affection for animals, and particularly cats and dogs. She was also a faithful fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and the Arizona Diamondbacks. Her family was also very important to her and she loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Gladys was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, sister, and aunt, and was a caring neighbor and friend. The love that she felt for her family and friends will live on forever in their memories and in their hearts. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 10, 2007, in the Holman-Howe Funeral Home, Lebanon. Burial will be in the Lebanon Cemetery. Visitation will be held Thursday evening from 10:00 a.m. until service time. Memorials to Hospice of the Valley in Phoenix, Arizona, may be made through the funeral home.
