Gloria Smith's Obituary
Gloria June Smith, daughter of Walter and Inez Sherwood Hain, was born February 9, 1933, in Rock Island, Illinois. She departed this life Thursday, February 23, 2006, in St. John’s Hospital, in Springfield, Missouri, at the age of seventy-three years, and fourteen days. Early in her life she was united in marriage to William Newland, who preceded her in death. On August 1, 1986, in Muscatine, Iowa, she was united in marriage to Wayne Albert Smith, and together they shared the last nineteen years. She also was preceded in death by her parents; her stepfather, O. J. Meyers; a brother, Art Hain; and a sister, Dorothy McCafferty. Gloria is survived by her husband, Wayne, of the home; six children, Chris Newland, and his wife, Dottie, of Linn Creek, Missouri, Roxy Waldon, and her husband, Jeff, of Camdenton, Missouri, Gary Whitford, and his wife, Pattie, Gordon Whitford, and his wife, Maurine, all of Newton, New Hampshire, Randy Newland, of Montgomery City, Missouri, and Rocky Newland, of Las Vegas, Nevada; five grandchildren, Willie Waldon, Rathan Newland, Conner Whitford, Gina Marie Whitford, and R. J. Newland; a cousin, Gee Gee Robinson, of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada; as well as a host of other relatives and friends. She was raised in Tipton, Iowa and graduated from high school in 1951. After graduating, she moved to California where she became “Rosie the Riveter”. She was the first woman electrician hired by McDonnell Douglas Aircraft in California and wired DC 3’s. She later became a real estate broker. After she and William were married, they moved to Iowa and Gloria continued her career in real estate. Following her marriage to Wayne, they moved to Camdenton, Missouri where she taught school in Camden Christian School. Gloria and Wayne went on the mission field in Paraguay, South America through New Tribes Missions from 1993 until 1997. Upon returning from the mission field, they made their home between Eloy, Arizona and Camdenton for the next several years. Gloria loved spending time in the mountains in the desert among the cactus. Gloria had been a Deaconess in the Evangelical Methodist Church and had taught at the Eloi Bible Institute. She had been active in many Bible Baptist Churches including the Bible Baptist Church of Camdenton. She liked to sing and play the banjo and had performed at several churches in the area. She also wrote poetry in her spare time. Her family was very important to her and she especially enjoyed her grandchildren and her pets. Gloria was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, and was a caring neighbor and friend. We celebrate her life and her accomplishments and will cherish the wonderful memories she created for her family and friends. Services will be held at 6:00 p.m. Thursday, March 2, 2006, in the Bible Baptist Church, Camdenton. Memorial donations to the Bible Baptist Missions Program may be made through the funerl home. Services are under the direction of Allee-Holman-Howe Funeral Home of Camdenton, Missouri.
