Grace E. Cumbea (Lebanon)'s Obituary
Grace E. Holman Cumbea, daughter of Willis C. and Lovey Pearl Carden Holman, was born June 23, 1915, in Craig, Nebraska. She departed this life Saturday, July 3, 2010, in St. John’s Hospital, in Lebanon, Missouri, at the age of ninety-five years, and ten days.
On October 17, 1936, she was united in marriage to James Major “Bunt” Cumbea, and to this union one son was born. Grace and Major celebrated their seventy-third anniversary this last fall.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Edwin Holman; and three sisters, Vera Jones, Vivian Jennings, and Fern Lewis.
Grace is survived by her loving husband, Major, of the home; a son, Steven Cumbea, and his wife, Sandra, of Prospect, Kentucky; two grandchildren, Stephanie and Tyler Cumbea, both of Prospect, Kentucky; two sisters, Wanda Scott, of Wichita, Kansas, and Helen McVey, of Nokomis, Florida; several nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
She was born in Nebraska and then raised in the Orla, Missouri community. After she and Major were married, they made their home in Lebanon, and lovingly raised their son. In addition to being a devoted homemaker to her husband and family, Grace also worked as a sales clerk for Casey’s Clothing and the Montgomery Ward Store for several years. Later, she worked as a cafeteria cashier in the Lebanon High School for eight years.
Grace made her profession of faith in Christ early in her life and was a longtime member of Highland Park Church of God in Lebanon.
In her spare time she enjoyed being outdoors where she particularly liked fishing. She was a huge fan of both NASCAR and stock car racing and enjoyed going to the races as often as possible. She possessed a delightful sense of humor and had a wonderful and unique laugh. Her family was always first and foremost in her life and she especially enjoyed her grandchildren.
Grace was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt, and was a kind and caring neighbor and friend. We celebrate her life and know that her family and friends will cherish the wonderful memories she created for them throughout the years.
