He was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, and then moved with his family to California during World War II. After graduating from high school, Hal went to the University of San Francisco where he was a member of the football team. In 1951, their team was undefeated and the members were praised for their loyalty to each other as an integrated university team, which was rare at that time. In 2006, the University recognized the team members with Honorary Doctorates of Humane Letters for their accomplishments and team spirit. Hal earned his degree in business administration and then served his country faithfully in the United States Army from 1954 until 1956. He was honorably discharged as a First Lieutenant on October 19, 1956. He returned to California where he owned and operated a janitorial service and window washing company for commercial businesses. In 2005, he and Lynn moved to the Lebanon area, near Bennett Spring.
Earlier in his life he enjoyed surfing, both tandem and body surfing. He was a National Champion Surfer and was recognized as a Waterman for his abilities in water sports. He belonged to the Lake of the Ozarks Wood Carving Club, and liked doing woodworking projects. He had a love for nature and was an avid bird watcher. One of his greatest joys in life was to make people laugh.
Hal was a loving husband, father, brother, uncle, and was a caring neighbor and friend. We celebrate his life and his accomplishments and know that his family and friends will treasure the wonderful memories he made for them during his eighty-six years.
