Harry Hughes' Obituary
Mr. Harry Clayton Hughes, age 97 of Bolivar, passed away at 8:21 AM Saturday, November 15, 2008 at the Citizens Memorial Healthcare Facility in Bolivar after a lingering illness. Mr. Hughes was born near Aldrich, in Polk County, Missouri the son of Albert Franklin Hughes and Alice Edna (Wollard) Hughes. He had a twin sister named Helen Naoma, who only lived a few months after birth. In 1926, Harry joined the First Church in Bolivar moving his membership from the First Christian Church of Aldrich. He graduated valedictorian of a class of 32 from Bolivar High School in 1928. He later graduated from Southwest Baptist University with an Associates Degree in 1930, Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield, with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Education, and Drury University in Springfield with a Masters Degree of Education. He was a member of the First Christian Church (Disciples Of Christ) in Bolivar and served as a Deacon, Elder, and as Chairman of the Board of Trustees. He was also a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge of Bolivar. He was united in marriage to Launa Susan Hicks December 9, 1944. They had one son, Thomas Clayton Hughes. He was a kind and loving husband and father. Surviving is his wife Launa Susan (Hicks) Hughes of Bolivar; his son, Thomas Clayton Hughes and wife April of Anaheim, CA; Five Grandchildren, Alexander Hughes and wife Claudia of San Jose, CA; David Hughes of Las Vegas, NV; Christine Hughes of Oakland, CA; Kathryn Hughes and Matthew Hughes of Anaheim, CA ; One Great Granddaughter, Avery Somerville Hughes, and one Great Grandson Owen Hughes. Also many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert Franklin Hughes and Alice Edna (Wollard) Hughes; two brothers, Jimmie and Fred Hughes; three sisters, Helen Naoma Hughes, Ora Hughes and Anna Dickerson; two sisters-in-law, Lois and Thelma Hughes; and a brother-in-law, Earl Dickerson. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 18, 2008 at 2:00 PM in the Butler Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jerry Book officiating. Musical selections will be His Eye Is On The Sparrow and In The Garden. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services from 1:00 to 2:00 PM. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in Bolivar under the care and direction of the Butler Funeral Home of Bolivar. Casketbearers will be Robert Kifer, Nick Maas, John Robert Smith, John Polk Campbell, Charles Stanek, and David Stutenkemper. Honorary Casketbearers will be Winton Allison, O'Neal Scott, Bob Beason, Charles Johnson, Dean McMillin, and Lewis Gordon. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church in Bolivar.
