She was born and lived in Iowa until she moved with her family to Texas in January of 1918, where she graduated from McAllen High School in McAllen, Texas. She attended college in San Marcos, Texas for a few years. She started her career in teaching in McAllen, Texas and then married Cornell. Shortly after they were married, they moved to Windsor, Missouri, before coming to Lebanon, Missouri in 1944. She taught in the elementary schools in both Stoutland and at Fort Leonard Wood, retiring in 1964 from Pershing Elementary School. Helen was a longtime active member of First United Methodist Church of Lebanon, where she was one of the oldest members of the church. Throughout the years she had enjoyed attending Bible study at the church. She also was a member of the Laclede County Retired School Personnel Association and worked with the Boy Scouts and the 4-H Club for many years. In her spare time she enjoyed gardening, fishing, and traveling. She was a “snowbird”, spending her winters in McAllen, Texas and her summers in Missouri.
