Helen McFadin's Obituary
Helen Matilda McFadin, daughter of Lawrence Leonard and Bertha Lee Graham McFadin, was born April 7, 1922, near Conway, in Webster County, Missouri. She departed this life Wednesday, January 27, 2010, in the Aurora Nursing Center, in Aurora, Missouri, at the age of eighty-seven years, nine months, and twenty days. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Homer, Joseph, and Clarence McFadin; and two sisters, Ruby Shockley, and Olivia Beatie. Helen is survived by two sisters, Marie Williams, of Lebanon, Missouri, and Mina Gossage, of Kansas City, Missouri; a number of nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other relatives and friends. She was born and raised in the Conway, Missouri area and graduated from Conway High School. She began teaching at the age of seventeen in a one room school and eventually earned her Bachelors Degree in Science from Southwest Missouri State University. She became involved in Beta Sigma Phi while in college and remained active in the sorority throughout her life. Later, she obtained her Masters degree from the University of Missouri. She taught high school business classes in the Joplin, Missouri area in a career that spanned more than thirty years. After she retired, she moved to Springfield and also helped to care for her mother during her golden years. Helen was a member of Conway United Methodist Church and had attended Schweitzer United Methodist Church in Springfield. In her spare time she enjoyed playing cards, particularly bridge. She loved her family dearly and especially enjoyed spoiling her nieces and nephews. Helen was a loving sister and aunt, and was a kind and caring neighbor and friend. We celebrate her life and her accomplishments and know that her family will treasure the wonderful memories she created for them throughout the years. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday February 1, 2010 at the Holman-Howe Funeral Home Lebanon. Burial will be in the Lebanon Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. until time of service under the direction of the Holman-Howe Funeral Home Lebanon, Missouri. A memorial has been established to the Schweitzer United Methodist Church in Springfield, Missouri. Donations may be made through the funeral home. Return to top
