Henry Mickel Summers (Lebanon)'s Obituary
Henry Mickel Summers, son of Cam and Vesta White Summers, was born May 29, 1925, in Ovapa, West Virginia. He departed this life Sunday, October 27, 2019, in Mercy Hospital, in Lebanon, Missouri, at the age of ninety-four years, four months, and twenty-eight days.
On May 7, 1966, he was united in marriage to Bonnie Rae Potter, and to this union one daughter and one son were born.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Bonnie, on April 29, 2005; a granddaughter, Ashley Newman; three brothers, Thurman, Russell, and Leonard Summers; and a sister, Ann Summers.
Henry is survived by a daughter, Kimberly Newman, and her husband, Derick, of Lebanon, Missouri; one son, Terry Summers and his wife Christy of Lebanon, Missouri; a son from a previous marriage, Gary Summers, and his wife, Martha, of the State of Kentucky, and an adopted son, Jordan Summers, of Lebanon, Missouri; seven grandchildren, Devon Newman, Cassandra Howlett, Bridgett Anderson, Gary Summers, Jr., Jenny Summers, Mary Summers, and Cody Summers; four great-grandchildren, Ashlyn Howlett, James Appleberry, Kaylynn Appleberry, and Gage Newell; a special friend, Kylee Rust, of Lebanon, Missouri; several nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
He was born and raised in West Virginia. At the age of sixteen, he joined the military and served his country faithfully in the United States Navy. He was stationed on the USS Salt Lake City during part of World War II. He then joined the United States Army and served during the Korean War and continued to serve until retiring. Henry married Bonnie in 1965, and they lived in Crocker, Missouri, where Henry operated a gas station. He worked at the Jefferson City State Penitentiary until retiring. Later, he and Bonnie moved to Lebanon to be closer to their grandchildren.
He never met a stranger and always thought of others, being willing to give the shirt off his back to help someone. He greatly enjoyed dancing with Bonnie. His family was very dear to him and he especially enjoyed having time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also loved his dogs.
Henry was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and was a caring neighbor and friend. We celebrate his life and know that his family and friends will treasure the wonderful memories he made for them during his ninety-four years.
A memorial has been established and contributions may be made through the funeral home.
