Herman Walter Englram (Bolivar)'s Obituary
Herman Walter Englram, of Bolivar, went to be with the Lord, Friday, March 10, 2017, at Colonial Springs Rehabilitation Clinic several weeks short of his 93rd birthday. The son of Herman B. and Cecelia E. Englram, he was born on April 26, 1924 in Chicago, Illinois.
After graduating from high school, he was drafted into the United States Army. Following basic training, he was assigned as the driver for the Battalion Commander of the 423rd Regiment where he refurbished an old Jeep he fondly named “Chop-Chop.” He arrived in England on the Queen Elizabeth in October 1944; in December, his division crossed over into Belgium where he participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He was captured on Dec. 19, 1944 and taken to Stalag IXB for internment. After six months, he and the thousands of other POW’s were liberated in June 1945.
Upon release, he was honorably discharged and received the Purple Heart along with other meritorious awards. He returned home to Illinois where he married Rose Ann Lavicka on Sept. 29, 1945. There he apprenticed at a local tool-and-die and later worked for the Illinois Bell Telephone Company where he became a section chief. He retired in 1982, ultimately settling in Bolivar, Missouri in 1988. He is preceded in death by his parents, step-brother Richard, and wife Rose. He is survived by his sisters Betty and LaVerne; his three children Glen Englram, Sue Dalzell, and Paul Englram; and four grandchildren Rachel and David Englram, and Matthew and Nathaniel Dalzell.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral service, from 9:00 – 10:00 am, at the Butler Funeral Home, in Bolivar.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 18, 2017 at Butler Funeral Home, in Bolivar. Pallbearers will be Glen, Paul, and David Englram, Tim, Matthew, and Nathaniel Dalzell. Interment will follow the funeral, and be held in Greenwood Cemetery.
