In Memory's Obituary
Alma Lucille Laird, daughter of Edgar and Lillian Bumpus Humphrey, was born February 8, 1916, in Portageville, Missouri. She departed this life Thursday, April 19, 2007, in Rocky Ridge Manor, in Mansfield, Missouri, at the age of ninety-one years, two months, and eleven days. In June of 1933, she was united in marriage to Floyd Laird, and to this union four daughters and five sons were born. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Floyd, on January 19, 1981; two sons, Tom and Bobby Laird; a brother, Richard Humphrey; and four sisters, Anna Cumming, Viola Counts, Reese Ruby, and Oralee Cook. Alma is survived by four daughters, Betty McKeel, and Ruby Herbst, both of Mansfield, Missouri, Janet Carrell, of Labadie, Missouri, and Shirley Garner, of Monett, Missouri; three sons, Billy Laird, of Crawford, Tennessee, Raymond Laird, of Sikeston, Missouri, and Donald Laird, of Belleville, Illinois; twenty-three grandchildren; forty-one great-grandchildren; thirteen great-great-grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other relatives and friends. She was born and raised in the Portageville, Missouri area. After she and Floyd were married, they were sharecroppers in the boot hill area of Missouri, where they lovingly raised their children. In 1960 they moved to Illinois and she helped her husband in maintaining a very large cemetery. In 1980, they retired and moved to the Hartville, Missouri community. Alma had made her profession of faith in Christ and was a member of the Pentecostal Lighthouse Church in Seymour. In her spare time she enjoyed making quilts, working in her garden, where she grew many vegetables, and visiting with her friends. Alma was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, and aunt, and was a caring neighbor and friend. We celebrate her life and her accomplishments and will cherish the wonderful memories she created for her family and friends. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, April 22, 2007, in the Holman-Howe Funeral Home, Hartville, Missouri.
