Jack Shreve (Bolivar)'s Obituary
Millard "Jack" Shreve, 91, passed away December 31, 2018 at his home.
Jack was born April 2, 1927 in Carthage, MO to Millard John Shreve and Ila Frances Strait Shreve. Jack grew up during the depression and those hardships molded his life as a very hard-working provider. He began working at a very young age to help his family make ends meet. Jack graduated from Joplin High School. He, his mother, and siblings moved from Joplin to Kansas City when he was in his early twenties. Jack, along with two of his sisters, helped to support their mother and two younger siblings for many years. Jack worked as an optician for over 50 years.
In February of 1963, Jack married Thelma Blankenship Powell. They lived in Kansas City, MO for almost 40 years before moving to Bolivar in 2003. Jack and Thelma were members of Ruskin Heights Baptist Church and then Mount Olive Baptist after moving to Bolivar.
Jack was a "Mr. Fix-It" kind of man. He liked to stay busy. He was very meticulous about keeping his house and vehicles in good repair. Jack was known for helping family and friends with projects, from sharpening neighbors' lawn mower blades to helping with home updates and repairs. He helped out at church many times with repairs.
Jack was a patient and wonderful man, looked upon as a "hero" to some of us. He will be greatly missed.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, son Carl Powell, son-in-law Richard Couch, and sisters Jeanne Shreve Perigin and Jill Shover.
Jack is survived by his wife Thelma of almost 56 years, two daughters, Jackie Sharman (Steve) of Bolivar and Donna Couch of Blue Springs, grandchildren Cody Sharman, Megan Sharman, Brad Couch (Amanda), Stephanie Pryor (Todd), Cindy Carhart (Ryan), five great-grandchildren, sister Billie Wing and brother Jerry Shreve.
Visitation for Jack will be from 2:00 to 3:00 P.M. Friday, January 4, 2019 with Services to follow at 3:00 P.M. at Butler Funeral Home. Burial at Greenwood Cemetery, Bolivar, Mo.
