James Amos' Obituary
James Lovern Amos, son of Walter Dee “W.D.” and Edna Frances Beard Amos, was born November 16, 1929, near Orla, Missouri. He departed this life Tuesday, March 3, 2009, in St. John’s Hospital, in Lebanon, Missouri, at the age of seventy-nine years, three months, and seventeen days. On June 10, 1953, he was united in marriage to Sally Frances Young, and to this union four daughters and two sons were born. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter-in-law, Teresa L. Amos; two sisters, Loretta Vernon, and Neta Fay Moore; and a nephew, Larry Amos. James is survived by his loving wife of fifty-five years, Sally, of the home; four daughters, Sally Marie McGuire, and her husband, Jim, Martha Jemes, and her husband, Farrell, all of Lebanon, Missouri, Margaret Dickinson, and her husband, Kennie, and Margie Faiferlick, and her husband, Neil, all of Camdenton, Missouri; two sons, James L. Amos, II, and his wife, Elaine, and Joseph M. Amos, and his wife, Cheryl, all of Lebanon, Missouri; eleven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three brothers, Eddie Amos, and his wife, Ruth, of Lebanon, Missouri, Jewel Amos, and his wife, Gail, of Conway, Missouri, and Johnny Amos, and his wife, Berniece, of Falcon, Missouri; a brother-in-law, Gilbert Vernon, of Lebanon, Missouri; a number of nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other relatives and friends. He was born and raised in the Orla community and attended Competition School. He then joined the United States Air Force and served his country faithfully during World War II. After he and Sally were married, they made their home in the Lebanon area before moving to their family farm in 1961. Throughout the years, James worked as a cattle farmer and also was a machinist for Detroit Tool Engineering for over fifteen years. James made his profession of faith in Christ early in his life and was a longtime active member of Antioch Baptist Church. He served as a deacon in the church for twenty-seven years. He loved life on the farm and liked old tractors. In addition to raising cattle, he also raised horses and liked to go horseback riding. He was a kind man that was always willing to help others in anyway he could. His family was very important to him and he especially enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. James was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and uncle, and was a caring neighbor and friend. We celebrate his life and his accomplishments and will treasure the memories he made for his family and many friends. Services will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday March 6, 20009 at the Antioch Baptist Church.Burial will be in Mt. Rose Memroial Park. Visitation is Thursday evening 7-8:30 pm under the direction of the Holman-Howe Funeral Home Lebanon, Missouri. Memorials have been established to the Antioch Baptist Church or the Gideon Bible Ministry. Donations may be made through the funeral home. Return to top
