James (Bob) McMillan (Lebanon)'s Obituary
James Ray “Bob” McMillan, son of James Ray and Evelyn Greene McMillan, was born March 11, 1923, near Greenwood, Missouri. He departed this life Thursday, July 8, 2010, in his home, near Phillipsburg, Missouri, at the age of eighty-seven years, three months, and twenty-seven days.
On October 6, 1944, he was united in marriage to Maxine Prosser, and to this union one son was born.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two half-sisters, Wilma and Darlene.
Bob is survived by his loving wife of sixty-five years, Maxine, of the home; a son, Gary McMillan, and his wife, Shirley, of Phillipsburg, Missouri; two granddaughters, Jana Harrill, and her husband, Kerry, of Lebanon, Missouri, and Julie Caffey, and her husband, Gary, of Phillipsburg, Missouri,; two great-grandchildren, Cole and Brooke Harrill; five step-grandchildren, Brian, Stacie, Aaron, Joe, and Amber; ten step-great-grandchildren; a sister, Marjorie Dillon, of Strasburg, Missouri; a half-brother, Woodrow Burton, of the State of Oregon; several nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other relatives and many friends.
He was raised in the East Linn, Missouri area and worked for a grocery store when he was a child. He then graduated from Garden City High School in Garden City, Missouri. He began working for the Katy Railroad and he and Maxine made their home in the Clinton, Missouri area. Later, the family moved to the Lebanon, Missouri area, and Bob worked for the Frisco Railroad as a telegraph operator. Throughout the years, Bob also worked as a dedicated farmer and stockman.
Bob made his profession of faith in Christ early in his life and was a longtime active member of the Phillipsburg United Methodist Church. He was a very caring man who was always willing to help anyone in need.
He enjoyed working on the farm and caring for his garden each year. He loved children and especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and enjoyed dressing up for Halloween and serving as Santa Claus’ helper. He was the last of the “real” gentleman and treated everyone with kindness. He possessed a delightful sense of humor and found great joy in spending time with his family and friends. He also loved his favorite dog, “Annie”.
Bob was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and uncle and was a caring neighbor and friend. He will be remembered for the honorable way he lived his life and for his strong spirit, extreme work ethics, and the discipline he exhibited his entire life.
