Jo Hill (Lebanon)'s Obituary
Berta Jo Hill, daughter of David E. and Cora Ruth Payne Phillips, was born October 6, 1923, near Lebanon, Missouri. She departed this life Tuesday, January 24, 2012, in Christian Health Care South, in Lebanon, Missouri, at the age of eighty-eight years, three months, and eighteen days.
On July 21, 1942, she was united in marriage to Hubert LaVern Shoffner, and they shared thirty-eight years before his passing on October 6, 1980.
On May 28, 1983, she married Everett Elmer Hill, and they shared ten years before his passing on June 18, 1993.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, David Shoffner; and a brother, Everett E. Phillips.
Jo is survived by five daughters, Barbara Johnson, and her husband, Don, of Lebanon, Missouri, Mary Sarten, of Grand Junction, Colorado, Barbara Jones, and her husband, Bill, of Fair Grove, Missouri, Ella Mae Theno, and her husband, Bill, of Tonganoxie, Kansas, and June Presley, and her husband, Ron, of Pleasant Hope, Missouri; three sons, Hubert Shoffner, Jr., of Grand Junction, Colorado, Alvin Hill, of Pleasant Hill, Missouri, and John Hill, and his wife, Pat, of Akin, South Carolina; twenty-four grandchildren, thirty great-grandchildren, and thirty-three great-great-grandchildren; her only niece, Betty Jean Johnson; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
She was born in Missouri, and raised in Idaho and Colorado. After she and Hubert were married, they made their home in Grand Junction, Colorado, and lovingly raised their children. In 1954, they moved to Indiana, where they lived until coming to Missouri in 1963. Jo continued to make her home in Lebanon after she and Everett were married. In addition to being a devoted homemaker to her husband and family, she worked as a nurses’ aide at Wallace Hospital, and later at Breech Medical Center in Lebanon.
Jo was a member of the Church of Christ and attended North Five Church of Christ for a number of years. She was currently an active member of the Conway Church of Christ.
She was very creative and talented in hand work including painting, quilting, and sewing. She also liked to work in her garden, grow beautiful flowers and go fishing. She always had a positive outlook on life and enjoyed spending time with her family.
Jo was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, and was a caring neighbor and friend. We celebrate her life and know that her family and friends will treasure the very special memories she created for them throughout the years.
