Joella Carriger's Obituary
Joella Carriger, daughter of Walter Lee and Eppah (Campbell) Evans, was born January 25, 1916, in Hartville, Missouri, in the home of Dr. John Campbell, her grandfather, which is this current location you are attending today. She departed this life Wednesday, May 19, 2010, in Hartville Care Center, in Hartville, Missouri, at the age of ninety-four years, four months and twenty-four days.
On May 5, 1937, she was united in marriage to Floyd Wilbert Carriger, who preceded her in death on October 23, 1997. She was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, John Campbell Evans and Victor Lee Evans; and a sister, Blanche Marie Wilkerson.
Joella is survived by three sons, Robert Carriger and his wife, Priscilla, of Grovespring, Missouri, Earl Carriger and his wife, Janet, of Grovespring, Missouri, and Howard Carriger and his wife, Tammy, of Grovespring, Missouri; three daughters, Dorthy Robertson and her husband, Russ, of Hartville, Missouri, Wilma Squires and her husband, J.O., of Grand Junction, Colorado, and Lois Kelley, of Hartville, Missouri; eighteen grandchildren, thirty-two great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
Born and raised in Wright County, most of her life was spent in the Hartville-Grovespring area. She graduated from the Hartville School in the Class of 1935. She and Wilbert were married in 1937 and thus began their life journey. In 1951 she and Wilbert purchased the family farm where they raised their family. Joella was a mother and homemaker in the truest sense. She centered her life around her home, the farming operation and her family, which included anyone who came to visit. Spending time with her family gave her great joy, especially the grandchildren, who held a very special place in her heart.
Joella had professed her faith in Jesus Christ and was a member of the Elk Creek Baptist Church. In earlier years meetings were held at community homes for the local quilting club with the ladies who were dear to her. In her later years her dog, Feisty, who was so precious to her, helped keep company with her. In her spare time she enjoyed working puzzle books.
Joella was a devoted mother; a beloved grandmother; a loving great and great-great-grandmother; and was a kind and caring aunt and friend. We celebrate her life and her accomplishments and will treasure the memories she created. She will be fondly remembered and greatly missed and will live on in our hearts forever.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM Saturday May 22, 2010 in Holman-Howe chapel, at Hartville, Missouri.
