John G. Lemons (Mansfield)'s Obituary
John George Lemons was home when he went to meet his Lord and Savior on January 19, 2019.
He was born in Newport, TX on August 18, 1929 to John and Eura Lemons.
John was saved at First Baptist, Bowie, TX when 12 years old. In all his moving around he was a member of whatever church of the town they lived in at the time. He taught Sunday School class for many years, then was a greeter after giving up teaching.
John started his work career in the oil business after graduating from North TX University in Denton. He worked as a roustabout in 1952 for Lone Star Gas Co., then worked at Tenneco Production for several years. He then took a position with Anadarko Production Company to open the company’s first office in Denver, CO. He made significant contributions in Denver before being transferred to the corporate headquarters in Houston, TX. In 1984 he took early retirement to live a quieter lifestyle in Mansfield, MO.
John loved Mansfield and was embraced by the community which provided valuable support to both him and Nina. He loved this town knowing all the young & old alike, loved going to the basketball games knowing all the kids. He got involved in the community affairs by serving two terms as President of the Chamber of Commerce and then found his creative side by joining the Ozark Mountain Players as the original “Grandpa” in the pageant. He also served on the crew who built the stage. One of his favorite pastimes was going to town to see friends. In fact, he was sometimes slower than the pony express when picking up the mail. A friend made the comment once that if people didn’t know the difference they would think John was the hometown boy, not Nina, he just liked everyone. He loved his church and thoroughly enjoyed being the greeter until he couldn’t go anymore.
John leaves behind his wife of 51 years, Nina and two grown children, Sam and Catherine, who live in the greater Denver area of Colorado, along with their spouses Mary and Steve. He has three grandchildren, Joshua Kendall Cunningham, Noah Devin Cunningham and Randy Allen Lemons and three great- grandchildren. His two siblings, Dale and his wife Anne and Shirley Hedstrom who lives in Texas along with numerous nieces and nephews spread across country.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the following: Hensley Cemetery in Mansfield or Hospice Compassus in Mountain Grove, whose care has been indispensable to our family.
