John is survived by his loving wife, Rosie, of the home; two daughters, Margaret Fuqua, of Edmond, Oklahoma, and Tracy Marie Delp, of Bridgeton, New Jersey; a son, Edward James Roche, of Smyrna, Delaware; five grandsons, David Greer, Victor Hoffman, and John Robert Hoffman, all of Edmond, Oklahoma, Edward Brian Roche, and Connor Mahoney, both of Smyrna, Delaware; three granddaughters, Rebecca Holcomb, of Elsmere, Delaware, Vanessa Lynn Delp, and Kelly Rose Delp, both of Bridgeton, New Jersey; a great-grandson, Hudson Yale Greer, of Edmond, Oklahoma; a sister, Martha Verge duPont, of Greenville, Delaware; a brother, William Verge, of Key West, Florida; a cousin who was like a brother, Garey Linthicum, of Owen Mills, Maryland; a very dear friend, Frank O’Neil, of Wilmington, Delaware; a number of nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends. He was born and grew up in Baltimore, Maryland and lived in Bear, Delaware. In 1944, he joined the Merchant Marines, and served with them until 1946. Then following his fathers example, who retired as Rear Admiral from the United States Navy, he served the Navy for a short time before entering the United States Army, and was honorably discharged November 15, 1961 in the rank of First Lieutenant. Following the service he worked as plant electrician and trouble shooter for General Motors in Wilmington, Delaware, where he retired after thirty-one years in 1992. He was a member of the Monroe Garden Association in Maryland and Pencader Grange #60 in Bear, Delaware. He and Rosie moved to Seymour, Missouri seven years ago to make their home, where he was a member of the Seymour Area Chamber of Commerce. John had accepted Christ as his Savior in the early spring of 2007 and had attended the Seymour Nazarene Church. In his spare time he enjoyed keeping up with politics, watching CNN and church services on television, reading, and boating. He loved to play Chess, and was a great handy man; he was very intelligent and could speak three different languages. John loved his family very much, and had a special love for his grandchildren. His family and friends also cared for him deeply, and he will be missed by his loving wife, family, extended family, and friends. John was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and a caring friend and neighbor. We celebrate his life and accomplishments and will cherish the wonderful memories he has created for his family and friends. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 6, 2007, in the Holman-Howe Chapel, Seymour. Burial will be held in Delaware at a later date.
