Joyce B. Sommer (Lebanon)'s Obituary
Joyce Barbara Sommer, daughter of Anthony and Bertha M. Lynch Wolken, was born August 27, 1940, in Lebanon, Missouri. She departed this life Saturday, June 30, 2018, in Magnolia Square Nursing Center, in Springfield, Missouri, at the age of seventy-seven years, ten months, and three days.
On September 28, 1957, she was united in marriage to John M. Sommer, and to this union one daughter and two sons were born.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John, in 2007; two brothers, Hubert and Marvin; and five sisters, Thelma, Della, Juanita, Gladys, and Bessie.
Joyce is survived by a daughter, Debbie Hilton, and her husband, Kip, of Ozark, Missouri; two sons, John Sommer, and his wife, Gina, of Lebanon, Missouri, and Michael Sommer, and his wife, Gissell, of Springfield, Missouri; nine grandchildren, Heather, Kassi, Jonathan, Chad, Krista, Eric, Chase, Luis, and Noelia; fifteen great-grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
She was born and raised in the Lebanon area and graduated from Lebanon High School. She worked at the Rice Stix Factory which later became the H. D. Lee Company, and then was a meter maid for the Lebanon Police Department for a few years. She worked as the secretary at the Missouri Extension Office for a number of years, served on the Laclede County Fair Board for several years, and also managed the Wyota Inn for a time. She was always a devoted homemaker to her husband and family.
Joyce was a longtime active member of Southern Heights Christian Church and later at Phillipsburg Christian Church. She had been very involved in church activities including teaching a Sunday school class and working in Vacation Bible School for a number of years.
She loved her dogs and cats and enjoyed their company. Her family was very dear to her and she especially enjoyed staying in close contact to her extended family.
Joyce was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and was a caring neighbor and friend. We celebrate her life and know that her family and friends will cherish the wonderful memories she created for them during her lifetime.
