Laura Hough (lebanon)'s Obituary
Laura Elizabeth Hough, daughter of Lee and Mamie Artelia Royster Keller, was born September 26, 1924, near Competition, Missouri. She walked on to Glory on Sunday, November 27, 2011, in St. John’s Hospital, in Lebanon, Missouri, at the age of eighty-seven years, two months, and one day.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Adrian Keller.
Laura is survived by a daughter, Connie Elam, and her husband, Freman, of Lebanon, Missouri; two grandchildren, Angelia Elam Brown, and her husband, Mark, of Marshfield, Missouri, and Kevin Elam, of Lebanon, Missouri; as well as a host of other relatives and many friends.
She was born and raised in the Competition community, and graduated from Competition High School. She then taught at Victory School for a few years. During World War II, Laura went to Detroit, Michigan, where she worked for a time. She soon returned to Lebanon, Missouri, and lovingly raised her daughter. Laura began a career in the garment industry, first with the Rice Stix Factory, then Reliance, and finally with the H. D. Lee Company, retiring as a supervisor after many years. She then worked as a consultant for the H. D. Lee Company in North Carolina and Georgia. After retiring for the second time, Laura worked part time for Motel TV and Mount Rose Memorial Park for a number of years, before going to work as a part time receptionist at Holman-Howe Funeral Home in 1986. While continuing her work at the funeral home, she also worked at First Baptist Church and Great Southern Savings and Loan Company.
Laura had professed her faith in Christ and was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Lebanon.
In her spare time she enjoyed going to auctions and had a number of garage sales. She also liked sewing, and particularly liked fishing at the Lake with her family. She was a very independent person who always took responsibility for herself. She was a good neighbor and friend and greatly enjoyed visiting with people that she had known through her work. She loved her family dearly, liked helping out with her daughter and son-in-law’s goat business, and was especially close to her two grandchildren.
Laura was a loving mother and grandmother, and was a caring neighbor and friend. We celebrate her life and her accomplishments and will remember her fondly for her laugh, her sense of humor, and her professionalism until the very end.
