She departed this life peacefully with her children by her side, Saturday, June 24, 2017, in her home, near Lebanon, Missouri, at the age of eighty-six years, nine months, and thirteen days.
On May 26, 1950, she was united in marriage to Walter Salzer, and to this union one daughter and one son were born.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Hilda Fish; her husband, Walter, on December 20, 2010; a brother, Floyd Fish; and an infant sister, Violet Fish.
Laverne is survived by her daughter, Cindy Fields, and her husband, Shane, of Jacksonville, Florida; a son, Bart Salzer, of Lebanon, Missouri; two grandchildren, Shane Truelove, of Lebanon, Missouri, and Cory Truelove, and his wife, Melissa, of San Antonio, Texas; four great-grandchildren, Sadie Porter, of Cole Camp, Missouri, Sonny and Nathan Truelove, both of San Antonio, Texas, and Ian Michael Young, of Hartville, Missouri; two great-great-grandchildren, Eliana and Emalyn Porter; a brother, Lawrence Fish, of Moore, Oklahoma; three sisters, Evelyn VanVugt, of the State of South Dakota, Eunice Rossi, of the State of Nebraska, and Lorraine VanBeek, of the State of Oklahoma; a number of nieces and nephews, including a very special nephew, Terry Fish, and his wife, Karen, of Wichita, Kansas; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
She was born in North Dakota and was raised in Kansas and South Dakota. Soon after she and Walter were married, they made their home in Los Angeles, California, and soon began raising their family. They purchased an avocado farm in Fall Brook, California and traveled there each weekend to care for the orchard. Laverne was always a devoted homemaker to her husband and family. In 1965, the family moved to a dairy farm near Lebanon, Missouri, and made their home. Laverne worked side by side with Walter in the operation of their farm, milking cows and plowing fields. After selling the farm and moving into Lebanon, Laverne helped Walter in managing their rental property and also was employed at Bill’s Farm and Home for a short time. Later, she would help care for her grandchildren.
Laverne was an active member of White Oak Pond Cumberland Presbyterian Church for a time. She and Walter helped build the stain glass windows in the church.
She loved horses and enjoyed riding and caring for them. She was an excellent cook, known particularly for her homemade rolls and bread, and also liked growing beautiful roses and other flowers. She also loved mowing the grass and caring for her lawn. Her family was very dear to her heart and she especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Laverne was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and was a caring neighbor and friend. We celebrate her life and her accomplishments and know that her family and friends will cherish the wonderful memories she created for them during her lifetime.
