Leota Mingus' Obituary
Leota Lois Mingus, daughter of Fred and Martha (McCormack) Keeler was born March 3, 1918 near Marshfield, Missouri. After a long and happy life she passed away at 3:40 p.m., Sunday, April 11, 2010 surrounded by her loving family in Glenwood Healthcare in Seymour, Missouri, at the age of ninety-two years, one month and eight days.
Leota was married to John Pose Mingus on June 17, 1939 and to this union one daughter and three sons were born and they made their home on a farm near Hartville, Missouri. They spent forty wonderful years together before his passing in October 1979. She was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church near Hartville, until moving to Seymour where she faithfully attended Seymour First Baptist Church.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; seven brothers, Bill, Fred, Homer, Dale, Virgil, Donald, and Carl Keeler; four sisters, Celesta Davis, Montie Blankenship, Lydia Kleier, and Goldie Keeler; and an infant sibling.
Leota is survived by her four children, Mary and Jim Vaughn of Springfield, Missouri, John and Glenda Mingus and Jack and Marilyn Mingus, all of Seymour, Missouri, and Jim and Penny Mingus, of Rogersville, Missouri; one brother, Vaughn Keeler and his wife, Wanda, and one sister, Virgie Daniels, all of Marshfield, Missouri. She is also survived by eleven loving grandchildren, Rick, Ronnie and Ellen, and Mark Vaughn, Alan Mingus, Doug and Amanda Helms, Jeff and Julie Mingus, Julie and Matt Ervin, Jeff and Julie Sell, Jade and Jason Poe, Jordan Mingus, and Brianna Mingus; nine great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; four sisters-in-law, Fern, Leota, Edith, and Ina Keeler; and one brother-in-law, Claude Mingus.
Besides being a devoted homemaker to her family, she had also worked at the Leader Store in Hartville, Ropers Department Store in Marshfield, The First Baptist Pre-School and Bergman-Miller Funeral Home in Seymour, and several years for The Seymour Pharmacy.
Leota was affectionately known as “Grandma Odie” throughout the community. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. “Grandma Odie” was always quick to greet you with a hug and she never met a stranger.
She loved the Lord and was eager to join Him and the rest of Christ’s Family on a bright sunshiny afternoon after telling her loved ones goodbye.
Services are 11:00 a.m., Thursday, April 15, 2010 in the Seymour First Baptist Church with burial in the Mt. Zion Cemetery northeast of Seymour, under direction of Holman-Howe Funeral Home of Seymour. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m., Wednesday in the funeral home.
