Lewis Carter's Obituary
Lewis Leon Carter, 80, rural Springfield, passed away at 7:37 p.m. August 28, 2009. Lewis was born December 26, 1928 near Mansfield, Mo. the son of Garrett and Blanche Davis Carter.
On July 31, 1949 Lewis Carter and Gloria Bogart were married. To this union one daughter and four sons were born.
Lewis was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Metz, his baby daughter, Linda and son Jeffrey R. Carter. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Gloria Bogart Carter; sons, Allen Carter and wife Gail, of Republic, Mike Carter, and Greg Carter, both of Springfield; a daughter-in-law, Janeen Carter, of Battlefield, Mo; 5 grandchildren, Douglas A. Carter and Wayne Carter of Springfield, Heather Shipman and husband Lee, Melinda Thrasher and husband Devin, and Amanda Schudy and husband Kris, one great-grandchild, Aubrey Ann Thrasher, all of Republic; Three brothers, Swede, Springfield, G.W., Fairfield, PA., Lynn, Raleigh, N.C. and three sisters, Judy Cook, Springfield, Lunda Hickey and June Mahaffey both of San Antonio, Texas; many relatives and friends.
Lewis was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
He graduated from Mansfield High School and left the day after graduation for Navy Basic Training. He served in Korea 1946-1948 as a Fireman First Class on the USS Davison.
After his honorable discharge he took on the job training and became a meat cutter, for many years he worked for Ramey's Supermarkets in Springfield and retired in May 1987 from Ramey's in Republic. He was an avid fisherman, and he loved to quail hunt. He enjoyed keeping the acreage neat and well kept, he loved to run the brush hog.
Lewis liked for the boys to pick and sing when we would all be together.
He and Gloria traveled all over the country to attend Bluegrass Festivals.
The body will be cremated.
Memorial service will be Wednesday September 2, 2009 at 2 p.m. with visitation one hour before the service in the Holman- Howe Funeral Chapel, Mansfield, MO. with Rev. Gordon Heckendorn officiating.
Burial will be in the Mansfield City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Mansfield Area Historical Society & Museum, P.O. Box 374, Mansfield, Mo 65704
