Loman Matlock's Obituary
Loman Darrell Matlock, son of Tolbert Houston and Docia Edna Young Matlock, was born May 23, 1926 in Mansfield, Missouri. He departed this life Wednesday, February 25, 2009 in St. John’s Hospital, Springfield, Missouri at the age of eighty-two years, nine months, and two days.
On March 15, 1946, Loman was united in marriage to Madge Wilcox and to this union three sons and two daughters were born.
Loman was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Brandon Miller; two brothers, Hugh and Burnis Matlock; and three sisters, Eula Duvall, Leona Reese, and Beulah Matlock.
He is survived by his loving wife, Madge of the home; three sons, Richard Matlock and wife Sheila of Mansfield, Missouri, Leland Matlock and wife Fran of Winslow, Arkansas; and Wendel Matlock and wife Susan, of Mansfield, Missouri; two daughters, Sondra Gray and husband David, and Teresa Letsinger and husband John, all of Mansfield, Missouri; eleven grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews, as well as a host of other relatives and many dear friends.
Loman was a lifelong resident of Mansfield and was a graduate of Mansfield High School in the class of 1944.
He spent ten years working as a bus driver for the Mansfield R-4 School district before going to work for the MFA in Mansfield, where he worked for forty-three years, retiring as Manager of the fertilizer plant.
Loman had made his profession of faith in Christ and has been a member at the United Methodist Church of Mansfield since 1949.
Loman was a hard worker who provided a wonderful life for his wife and children. He wasn’t afraid to tackle any job and after retiring did odd jobs to keep busy. He gave unconditionally of his time to those who needed help with projects. He loved fixing things and never saw a reason to throw away anything, even after replacing it with a new one. Never knew when he might need parts.
Loman was a friend to everyone he met, young and old alike. He never met a stranger. He loved his family so much and loved spending every Sunday with them, as well as holidays. He truly enjoyed his kids, grandkids and more recently his great-grandkids which gave him a run for his money.
He loved hunting and fishing and has passed down the ability to his sons and grandsons. He successfully killed his last deer during this past season. He loved to play “Train” with dominoes and had played Pitch since a young age. His favorite part about these two games was winning!
His sense of humor and quick wit entertained those around him especially times when the Cardinals were playing on TV – and whether winning or losing, the name LaRussa popped up frequently. He loved sports and was generally watching a game on television, while listening to one on the radio, and had the ability to remember details of both.
He prided himself on his gardening skills and was especially proud of his corn – which he loved to share with others. He made many trips to town to deliver corn to people who didn’t have a garden.
Loman has left big shoes to be filled within his family – our hope is that we can make him as proud of us as we are to have had him for a dad. We love you dad and we will miss you.
Services will be 1:00 P.M. Saturday, February 28, 2009 in Holman-Howe Chapel, in Mansfield, with burial in Mansfield Cemetery, under direction of Holman-Howe Funeral Home, of Mansfield, Missouri.
