Lylian Huffman's Obituary
Lylian Huffman was born Lylian Lenore Lee on 7 December 1907 in Mountain Grove, Missouri to Elvin and Mae (Bridgers) Lee. Her fifty- year marriage to Marion Jesse Huffman of Norwood commenced on 3 June 1933, and the couple moved to Hartville shortly thereafter. Lylian, a graduate of Southwest Missouri State, was a pianist for silent films in the 1920s, worked as a newspaper editor in the '40s and '50s, and taught elementary school for many years. Mrs. Huffman was known for public service and remained a member of the United Methodist Church, Republican Party, Hartville Garden Club, Rebekahs, Eastern Star, and Athenian Club. She and other activists in Mountain Grove were instrumental in preserving Faurot Hall at the Fruit Experiment Station. Lylian served as president of the Wright County Library Board and cofounded the Wright County Historical Society. Her calm, learned demeanor set the tone of many a meeting. Lylian loved nothing more than gathering with family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marion; her sister and brother- in-law Ethel (John) Peterson; and her son, Philip. She is survived by her daughter, Marilyn Huffman; daughter-in-law, Sherry Huffman; granddaughter, Hilary (Lyndon) Sommer; grandson, Grierson (Bettrys) Huffman; and six nephews and a niece. In 2007 she celebrated her 100th birthday in high spirits. Lylian passed away on 16 July 2008. A graveside service will be held at Steele Memorial Cemetery in Hartville on 19 July at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers and in accordance with Lylian's wishes, donations may be sent to the Hartville United Methodist Church, the Wright County Historical Society, or the Hartville Garden Club.
