Mabus Rose Weaver (Hartville)'s Obituary
Mabus Rose Garner Weaver, daughter of Charley “Duke” and Martha Belle Reddick Garner, was born on May 25, 1921 near Hartville, Missouri in Wright County. She departed this life surrounded by family and friends on April 19, 2014, in Ava, Missouri at the age of 92 years, 10 months and 25 days.
Mabus grew up in the Green Valley/Coon Creek communities. She attended Green Valley Elementary School. After graduation there, she went on to Hartville High School. After her school days, she taught school in the rural schools of Oak Grove, Durbin and Rogers of Wright County.
On December 29, 1942, Mabus was united in marriage to Verlin Elston Weaver. To this union two children were born; one son, Ronald, and one daughter, Beverly. Together, Verlin and Mabus shared 43 years of married life.
Mabus was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Verlin; four brothers—Ervil “Buck” Garner, Arlin Garner, Charles “Rog” Garner, and Monroe Garner; three sisters, Leota Stigall, Dorothy Claxton and Edna Stigall.
Survivors include: son, Ronald Weaver and wife Saundra of Lees’ Summit, MO; daughter, Beverly Coberly and husband Doran of Ava, MO; three grandsons, Steve Weaver and wife Susana of Denver, CO, Jared Coberly and wife Emily of Columbia, MO, Jeffrey Coberly and wife Eve of Fort Dix, New Jersey, and one granddaughter, Jena Coberly of Ava, MO; great-grandchildren, Chloe Weaver of Houston, TX, Tristan Weaver of Honolulu, HI, Jacob, Benjamin and Christopher Coberly of Columbia, MO, Alijah and Savanna Coberly of Ft. Mabus made a profession of faith in Christ early in life at the age of 11. She was later baptized into the Green Valley Baptist Church. She was a faithful and devoted Christian serving in whatever capacity she could serve. She was a great lover of music and served by playing the piano, organ, and keyboard in several different churches where her husband served as pastor for 26 years. After his demise, she continued to serve in the music ministry and served her Lord as long as her health permitted. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Ava, MO. She taught Ron how to play the guitar and Bev how to play the piano, creating a love of music in their families. As a family, a lot of time was spent around the piano and music in the home. Mabus worked with the Green Thumb program after Verlin passed working in Hartville, Mansfield and Ava. She learned computer skills in her 80s.
Mabus loved living on the farm. She and Verlin were dairy farmers in Wright County. Mabus gardened, canning and freezing her family’s food. She also made Ron and Beverly’s clothing until they entered high school. Mabus was very good at managing her home, family and resources. (In fact, she had written the majority of this obituary more than three years ago before moving into Ava Place…..down to the detail of songs, minister and pallbearers.) She was a woman of strong faith, praying continually for her husband, Verlin, as he served in World War II; her son, Ron, as he served in Vietnam; her grandson, Steve, as he served in Iraq and Afganistan; and her grandson, Jeff, as he served two tours in Iraq. She was proud of their commitment to serve our country. She was a devoted mother, taking complete and full care of Bev after a bad car accident. Bev attributes her opportunities and any success she has had to the hours Mabus spent helping her to walk again and use her hands. She was also very proud of her grandson, “Dr. Jared” and his medical career and granddaughter, Jena and daughter-in-law, Saundra, who both chose to become teachers….a profession that Mabus respected highly, as that is what she did when she launched as an adult. She was equally proud of the grand-daughters-in-law, Emily (who is also a doctor), Eve (a gerontology major and Hospice volunteer) and Susana (a graduate teaching associate in the field of art) and the love they showed in her family. Her greatest joy in her later years was playing and talking with her great grandchildren, Alijah, Jacob, Savanna, Ben, Wyatt and Chris. She also encouraged her older great-grandchildren, Chloe and Tristan to continue their education after high school which they are doing. The children brought her great delight.
Mabus was known for her loving and spirited personality. She continued to be loving and caring, even when her health deteriorated. She always acknowledged life’s harsh reality, encouraging her family to “buck-up” and embrace it. Her family feels blessed to have been raised in her loving care. She will be greatly missed by many family members and friends.
