Mada Lou McKenzie, daughter of Brooks and Dovie (Smith) Hendry, was born October 19, 1929, in Corrigan, Texas. She departed this life Wednesday, March 21, 2007, surrounded by her family in her home, in Lebanon, Missouri, at the age of seventy-seven years, five months, and two days. On December 22, 1952, she was united in marriage to Virgil E. McKenzie, and they shared a life together until his passing on August 20, 1994. She was also preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Clovis Hendry; and her sister, Nelda Lowery. Mada is survived by a son, Robert McKenzie, and his wife, Sherry, of San Diego, California; a daughter, Carol Hayes, and her husband, Jeff, and their two children, Tyler and McKenzie, of Lebanon, Missouri; a brother, Boyce Hendry, and his wife, Beulah, of Hudson, Texas; a sister-in-law, Lula Hendry, of Hudson, Texas; nieces and nephews; cousins; as well as many dear friends, especially caregiver Laura Pine, as well as Levi and Brandie Pine, and Savannah. Mada was born in Corrigan, Texas and raised in Hudson, Texas, near a large extended family. When she was a small child, a tornado ripped through town and destroyed her childhood home, leaving her Daddy Brooks to carry Mada several miles to the doctor treat her injuries, although he himself had a broken hip. After she and Virgil were married, they made their home in several places, including Japan, Germany, Georgia, and Texas while he was serving in the military. They eventually moved to Lebanon where she was a devoted homemaker. She was an accomplished cook and an excellent seamstress. She was an avid reader and loved to read to her grandchildren when they were young. She loved cats and the beauty of the natural world. Mada professed her faith in Christ at an early age and was confirmed in the First Baptist Church of Lufkin, Texas. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Lebanon since 1965. Mada was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and a caring neighbor and friend. We celebrate her accomplishments and will cherish the wonderful memories she created for her family and friends. Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 24, 2007, in the First Congregational Church, Lebanon. Burial will be in the Lebanon Cemetery. Visitation will be held Friday evening from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home. Services are under the direction of Holman-Howe Funeral Home of Lebanon, Missouri. Memorials to the Lebanon/Laclede County Library may be made through the funeral home.
