Marie was born and raised in the Grovespring area. While she was still in high school, she met and fell in love with Leslie and the two were happily married and started a family. Leslie joined the Army shortly after they were married and had to go overseas. This left Marie by herself to take care of their new baby son Henry. Thankfully, her parents took her in and helped until Leslie’s return home. Soon after Leslie came home, Marie started working for the Reliance factory for a short while before becoming one of the first Avon Ladies in the area in the 1960’s and kept selling the product for nearly 40 years. While she was busy selling Avon products to all the ladies of Grovespring and Hartville, she was also working on getting her high school equivalence and obtained the certification. Later, she started working for the Post Office as a clerk and sometimes had to run a route to cover when necessary. Marie was a woman that loved to stay busy and never wanted to slow down.
Marie was saved and baptized at an early age and was a member of the Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church. When Marie married Leslie, she transferred her membership to the Mt. Zion (Cuba) Church for a short while before eventually returning back to Mt. Pisgah has been a member for close to eighty years.
Marie commonly wrote “The Grovespring News” for the Lebanon Daily Record, the Mansfield Mirror, and the Marshfield Mail to let the area know what was happening. She thoroughly enjoyed bowling and when her eye sight started to fail her, the ladies would help line her up and she would toss the ball and listen for the pins and her friends’ reactions. She loved to play cards with her friends and family and always wanted to babysit the grandchildren. She especially enjoyed being visited by her great-grandchildren. Marie was a very social person and she was very active in her church. She was a caring woman that always wanted to help anyone who needed it. Marie was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother, sister, aunt, and dear friend. We celebrate her wonderful life and will always cherish the many happy memories she created. We would also like to thank everyone that helped take care of her and helped her feel comfortable in her time of need.
