Marilyn L. Broyles (Lebanon)'s Obituary
Marilyn Louise Huckaby Broyles, daughter of Ernest and Helen Cathleen Purdy Huckaby, was born January 10, 1935, near Lamar, Missouri. She departed this life Monday, August 28, 2017, in Cox Medical Center South, in Springfield, Missouri, at the age of eighty-two years, seven months, and eighteen days.
On July 7, 1968, she was united in marriage to James Russell Broyles, and they shared the last forty-nine years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Carol Jean Baughman; a nephew, Mike Baughman; and a brother-in-law, Tom Kinnett.
Marilyn is survived by her loving husband, Russell, of the home; a niece, Brenda; a nephew, Mark and children; a niece-in-law, Lynn and children; a sister-in-law, Betty Kinnett, and her children, Doug and Marty, Dwight and Lynn, and Teresa and George, and their children; special friends, Dennis and Judy Lambeth; as well as a host of other relatives and many friends.
She was born in January of 1935, and was joined five years later by her sister, Carol Jean, who was the joy of her life. Marilyn started school at the age of five and skipped two grades. She finished high school at the age of sixteen and attended college for one year and a summer. She then began teaching in rural schools in Barton and Jasper counties for three years. She saved her money to buy a car, but her dad said that if you are smart, you will go on to school. She thought about it all weekend and her dad took her to college on Monday morning. She finished her Associates Degree in 1954 from Southwest Baptist College in Bolivar, Missouri. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri, the summer of 1956. She later earned her Master’s Degree in Education from Drury College in Springfield, Missouri, the summer of 1967.
She began teaching in the Independence Public Schools in Independence, Missouri, in 1956 and continued to teach second2 grade until retiring in 1985. Once they retired, Marilyn and Russell moved back to Lebanon and enjoyed several good years before Marilyn’s health began to fail.
Marilyn was converted, baptized and joined the Harmony Baptist Church in Barton County, Missouri at the age of twelve.
In her spare time she enjoyed reading, writing letters, and sending cards for all occasions.
Marilyn was a loving wife, sister, aunt, and was a caring neighbor and friend. We celebrate her life and know that she will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her.
A memorial has been established to the Round Prairie Cemetery.
