Marion Wheeler's Obituary
Marion Audrey Wheeler, son of Elijah Greenberry and Millie Milzina (Butts) Wheeler, was born on July 23, 1926. He departed this life Saturday, April 16, 2011, in St. John’s Hospital, Springfield, at the age of eighty-four years, eight months and twenty-three days.
He started working at an early age to help his mother. It was a trait he would continue his whole life. He always took care of his family whatever they needed. He worked various farm jobs until he left home at sixteen to go to Kansas to work with his uncle in the feed mills. He came back when he had saved enough money to buy a car to drive back. He worked a full time job, almost always he had one or two part-time jobs to fill any extra . Usually his jobs always included two things, driving and working with people, which he continued into his 82nd year.
He married Irene Crowley on May 30, 1946. Together they shared thirty-nine years, working together in cafes, driving freight routes, was a mail carrier for twenty plus years, and various other occupations, along with raising a family. Irene passed away on July 7, 1985, after a three year battle with cancer.
On January 24, 1992, he married Gaye Asher. Together they shared 19 ½ of marriage. Marion passed away after dealing with cancer for over 15 years, but it was his heart that finally failed him but never his spirit or his love for his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Ray, George, and Lenzy; a sister, Anna Mae Miller; grandsons, Johnny Wayne Thomas and Johnny Lee Coffman; two great-granddaughters, Lisa Ann and Lora Lea Munden, and more relatives that we can list.
Marion is survived by his wife, Gaye; a son Jerry; a daughter, Betty Coffman and husband, Howard; a step-son Riley Asher; a step-daughter, Gale Roberts; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
He attended Wolf Creek Church while he lived in Mansfield. When he and Gaye were married they attended Oak Grove Assembly in Springfield. To show the kind of man he had become, after his pastor had prayed for him in the emergency room on Friday night, Marion turned around and prayed for his pastor. He told us he had been sending building materials to his home in Haven and he was ready to go home.
We will miss your sweet smile and love of life and people. Enjoy your new home. No one deserves it more than you.
