Mary Rowena Davis (Buffalo)'s Obituary
Mary Rowena (Campbell) Davis was born on February 21, 1929 in Blackshear, Georgia to William Sam and Maime Myrtle (McCaskill) Campbell. When she was six, her mother took her and her six-month-old sister, Marlene, and boarded a train to California. They joined her father there in the migrant worker camps during the Great Depression.
Mary graduated from Wasco Union High School on May 28, 1948 and subsequently earned a nurses’ aide degree. She worked at Peninsula Community Hospital in Monterey, California for 15 years. She enjoyed working in the nursery with the newborns and had many tales to tell of her years there.
Mary was united in marriage to Lawrence Corley Davis on June 8, 1965 and moved to Humboldt County, California to join him there. To this union a daughter, Rebecca, was born in 1968. Mary dedicated her life to loving her family, as well as five beloved stepchildren. While in Humboldt County, Mary worked for 29 years as a teacher’s aide at Dow’s Prairie Elementary School in McKinleyville. After she retired, she stayed on for another 10 years as a foster grandparent; working with the teachers and children there.
Mary passed away at her home near Long Lane, MO on December 24, 2021 at the age of 92 years. She is survived by her daughter, Rebecca and husband Gary Howard of Long Lane, MO; stepson, Dan and wife Deb Davis of Oregon; stepdaughter, Leslie \and husband Greg Cannafax of Eureka, CA; stepson, Jim Moody of California; stepdaughter, Sharon and husband Larry Moore of Redding, CA; and stepdaughter, Teresa and husband Kirk McGinnis of Washington State. She also leaves numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins who will all truly miss her.
Throughout her life, from her time caring for newborns in the hospital throughout her years at the elementary school, Mary loved any and all children she came in to contact with. She was baptized at an early age into the Baptist faith and throughout her life, her faith and light for Christ was an inspiration to many. She will be deeply missed by family and friends.
